What's new

Maharashtra crosses 60,000 farm suicides

If 300,000 cows were killed, you probably wouldn't even say what you just said! That shows how important Indian farmers lives in your eye.

20 million cows are slaughtered each year

A chinese giving lecture on human life. You see something new everyday haha!

Chinese are way head of India in terms of human life. In case you have no idea where India stands in the world on this matter, here is the link to help you to know your place:

http://hdr.undp.org/en/composite/HDI\

And average Chinese are living 9 years longer than average Indian:

List of countries by life expectancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

20 million cows and Buffaloes are slaughtered each year in India for beef
What's your point

The way you talk about 300,000 Indian farmer suicides shows how compassionate you people are towards your own less fortunate countrymen. It is freaking chilly.

Shining India...And somewhere their senior member @Abingdonboy were talking about 3rd largest economy , giving sleepless nights to Pakistanis....!

He was also calling Pakistan somalia of South Asia. may be in his delusional world 300000 farmers commit suicide in America too.

OK, so 300,000 Indian farmers suicide "is a negligible figure and not something to cry about"? What about your own family members are among this 300,000?

I know you bunch who can afford to use internet to "protect motherland" are patriotic Indians, but showing your cold blood side doesn't fit well with a superpower wannabe.

This figure is bull shit
Commie journalists never look at the whole picture
Why just focus on farmer suicide
Their were 1.2 Million other suicides in the country between 1995-2015

Why no intellectual right about suicides by students, engineers , Doctors, Business men, people who actually pay taxes

If over a 20 year period, just 300000 farmers have commited suicide, this is a negligible figure and not something to cry about
Since their are 700 Million farmers in the country
Number of farmers killing themselves in India is lower than the people killing themselves in Europe and USA combined over the same period.

Yellow journalist just use this figure to generate trp

We should make sure not even 1 farmer has to kill oneself. We need to educate them about bank loans. It really is a tragic situation... badly and sadly :(

Bhai
More than 1.2 million other people killed themselves during the same period
Why no journalists and trolls cry About that

A farmers life is no more precious than the life of a student , an Engineer, a Doctor, a Teacher, a Business man

But still no one cries about them

And if all the sino trolls use Google instead of Baidu for a change, they will see that more Chinese killed themselves during the period of 1995-2015 than Indians

This is a crime against humanity, UN must punish india for not doing its best to solve the problem of extreme poverty for the majority of its population.

Check out Wikipedia for number of Chinese killing themselves to escape from the clutches of CCP
You will be surprised

As a matter of fact, these Tata, Birla or Reliance could act as a savior for these farmers. Most of their stores procures directly from the farmers, so the farmers receives better price of their crops, and their vegetable outlets can sell it at a competitive price, removing the middle men.
So why they are suciding after getting better prices from these giants

This will be the do or die year for Modi as far as farming/agro goes.

The soil health card is not enough.

There needs to be a huge push for irrigation (efficient types like drip irrigation roping in Israeli tech where needed) + the relevant price support mechanisms for essential staple crops (harnessing the rural banking and PMJDY scheme) and power reforms (which can rope in the surplus power that Minister Goyal has been exemplary at) which will ensure 24/7 power supply but payment required...basically replicating what has been achieved in Gujarat on a much larger scale.

The crux of the problem lies with being too monsoon dependent and overutilising scarce groundwater combined with crap inefficient irrigation methods (flooding, lattice flows etc).

It was a very big mistake that it has been left this late as it is, it should have started from day one of BJP govt.

If its ignored again this year, then BJP is going to be kicked out of power. I hate to say it but thats a real possibility.

Exactly! I think India, due to her tropical location and massive population and ill-educated farmers, is particularly at high risk of cycles of prolonged droughts and floods caused by global warming.

Small dams, check dams, rainwater harvesting and local pond/dam rejuvenation are the ways to go. That needs to happen along with water conservation and strict water rationing. I simply don't understand the fascination of drought prone Vidarbha farmers to grow extremely water-intensive crops like sugarcane (and paddy elsewhere in India). Obviously the blame should also go to people in high places (Pawars) who own literally hundreds of sugar mills, for draining the whole dam leaving little water for poor and marginal farmers driving them to utter desperation and ultimately suicides.

All water-intensive crops need to be strictly moderated or banned altogether at times of droughts so that every farmer downstream get atleast some water rather than a few wealthy farmers upstream usurping it all for their wasteful ways. And this needs to be enforced strictly.

However, as tragic as the farmer suicides are, that statistic should be taken in perspective of overall suicides (farmers or otherwise) since India, due to massive population, will always have a high absolute number in all kinds of statistics. All lives are important, not just those of farmers. And not all suicides by farmers can be attributed to economic depravity or failing crops. It may come as a surprise to many concerned posters from Pakistan and China here that farmers in India (just like everybody, everywhere else) commit suicide for various reasons.

Finally, there has been a significant but under-reported abuse of farmer suicide statistics. I can personally vouch for several of the farmers' deaths (that were clearly NOT suicides but were caused by alcoholism or other causes) but were deliberately recorded as suicides so as to get the maximum benefit out of local governments for their family members. The local governments themselves are only eager to turn a blind eye to all this in order to hide their own shortcomings, politics and corruption!

Brilliant post friend. You have nailed the issue quite literally on the head, it is about water collection, conservation and management through proper efficiency and common sense. If it can happen quite well in water scarce Gujarat, then it can certainly happen almost anywhere in India with the appropriate leadership, implementation and feedback + adjustments. There is no shortage of resources to see this now, we are not a cash or resource starved country anymore...we are simply somewhat policy starved and corruption saddled in many of the farming areas.

I also posted something exactly similar to your 2nd point in another thread some time back where I compared farmer suicide rate to national suicide rate. Complete agreement with you here too.

True, but what no mainstream media mentions is the abuse of the suicide statistics.

I have known personally the deaths of a few people from my region, who died of alcoholism and other bad habits & lifestyle diseases, were all reported in local news papers as SUICIDES due to crop failures! They were NOT even farmers in the strict sense!

Although I can't cast aspersions on all farmer suicides, such abuses really tend to undermine the whole statistics and defeat the whole exercise to address the problem.

Yes when I brought this up, a certain member attacked that point voraciously and refused to believe or try to comprehend any part of it. Its those sorts of people that the media feeds upon for their daily bread. Sheeple that cannot think for themselves or apply a little common sense.

But as the Yajur Veda says, truth ultimately prevails.
