The Indian states Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have the highest GDP in India and the 2 states
are also some of the most developed and most urbanised states in India. But why are these 2
states so successfull compared to other regions in South Asia. Are there any cultural or
even historical reasons for their success?

There are certainly cultural reasons for the success of Maharashtra. A combination of Parsis and Gujarati businessmen is one. The same reason why neighboring Gujarat is a success too. For Tamilnadu the only greatest reason for success that I can think of is, Tamils rejected Congress in 1967 and have kept it out ever since.

Maharashtra contributes 14.10% of total India's GDP with gross state domestic product around of 1,476,233 crore INR at current prices. India's most populated state Uttar Pradesh is at second position with share of 8.24%. Tamil Nadu (7.93%) is at 3rd, India's most economically free state Gujarat (7.31) is at 4th and West Bengal (6.75%) is at 5th position in year 2013-14.

Not much difference between TN and Gujarat. Maybe Modi should replicate Maharashtra model. Then again MH has been a business powerhouse even during the early British Raj. Whereas TN is slowly becoming a bad place to do business. It is better Modi sticks to his GJ model.

Modi doesnt have much influence on the development of the different Indian states. After all India is a federal state
where every Indian state has its own politics. This is one of the reasons why there is a huge gap in terms of
development between the different Indian states. The difference in development between the most developed
Indian states like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to the least developed Indian states like Bihar and
Uttar Pradesh is comparable to the difference between north Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Per capita GDP is a better measure than absolute GDP. TN and Maharashtra are almost the same as Gujarat.

I'm from TN and it has slowed down in recent years because of policy paralysis and focus on freebies thanks to the fat woman and the old man. There's also an increasing trend for companies to move to Gujarat or Andhra Pradesh because of power reliability and cost of labour respectively.

There was no model in Maharashtra instead Maharashtra is not upto its potential due to petty politics by local politicians n rampant corruption at every level..... Even contesting in ward election you require crores of fund to run election campaign forget about MP OR MLA....
