My sister studied in Britain for three years for her BSc, and her experience with British Muslims was not very good. She often complained of their rigidness when it comes to religion and their non-integration into broader British society. She even said many British Muslims hated British society and called it Kafir, Infidel country. How come you people have come so far? Hate your own country that much that provided you with shelter, something your former country didn't?Okay, that's reasonable. Mostly just common sense. What I'm interested in here is what exactly makes Norwegian Muslims different from, say, British Muslims.
Yes, we do participate in various Christening ceremonies around the Christmas. It all happens at the school and inside the churches. Wearing a Hijab or keeping a beard is not banned, so many Muslims and non-Muslims alike have it. Also, religiosity in Norway is generally very liberal. No one asks for your religion whether you are studying, are on work or just being outside your home.Does the second point allow for wearing a Hijab or keeping a beard? And about the third one, do integrated Norwegian Muslims tend to participate in religious festivals other than their own? Knowing and respecting is one thing, taking part is another.
