Reality check: the basic design of cars in Pakistan is of Japanese origin. It does not show our indigenous design and engineering capability in any way. Please don't confuse manufacturing with design/engineering.

get out of design chakkar, car was designed 100 years ago then evolved, frige, washinging machines etc were designed 150 years ago..even a good machnic can design a car now...30 year ago i owned a motor cycle in Karachi and as a newbie motor cyclists i didnt realize i have to change oilin the engine so one day i was driving and engine ceased to work. I took it to a machnic accross the street, a 25 year old kid..told me engine needs to cleaned up...open the engine while I watched and like a pro took all 200 parts out cleaned, rubbled, oiled and even located the parts that need to replaced (i couldnt tell how they are bad parts but he with his naked eye knew it)...in two hours I started my motor cycle and it sounded like a new one. That guy could easily design a motor cycle engine with a help form a software, he exactly knew the movement and timing of every part in engine.

You are making a mistake. The design means everything. From the metallurgy to the wires. Access to the engine, The fabrication and everything. That is something no body will give you. Design is something that helps you innovate. What you are telling is the capability to reverse engineer. Not design.

You are fundamentally misunderstanding what I am saying. Let's recap a bit. This thread is to inform everyone about items that are made in Pakistan. I am saying, although that is well and good, but we are largely a manufacturing economy. Our industry is mostly involved in making copies of items that were designed by others. By design I mean everything from selection of materials to joining and welding, to human machine interface, to satisfying regulations and getting relevant certifications etc.

In this context let us discuss the car example. You feel that the road side mechanic can design an engine. Let us review the innovations happening around the world on this area. People are designing self-driving cars. Engines are bring controlled by extremely complex software to maximize fuel efficiency and minimize carbon footprint. Ergonomic and safe designs are being researched. Improvements are being made in algorithms that control automatic gears. And people in world market are paying millions of dollars for these innovations. Now, can your car mechanic compete with these advancements? No.

That said, there is no doubt that our car mechanic friend is a genius. Being illiterate, having no formal experience, he can still utilize this sharp mind and skillful hands to accomplish an incredibly complex task. And this is not a matter of just learning by copying. When new engines come in the market, it takes a while for our mechanics to catch up, but eventually they figure it out.

What I am trying to propose is that we should take this raw talent in our country and polish it so we start competing in the international market. No, it doesn't necessarily mean enrolling our mechanic friend in an algorithmic design course. But we need to develop this human capital whose innovations can help our exports, so we come out as a hi-tech, advanced economy on the world stage.

Pakistan produced 2.2 million motorcycles in 2016, with a deletion level as high as 95%.

KARACHI: Motorcycle production in the country reached its highest level with 2.2 million units produced during 2016, up by 18.53 percent as compared to 1.9 million motorcycles produced in 2015.

Detailed assessment of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) latest data reveals that motorcycle production, including locally made Japanese brand and Chinese made imported motorcycles' brand, stood at 2,267,468 units in 2016 while 1,912,944 units were produced in 2015.

Industry experts attributed this splendid growth in production of motorcycles to lower oil prices and an improved business environment which has provided a much needed boost to the motorcycle industry in the outgoing year because these two wheelers have been become a popular choice for Pakistanis to commute amid the lack of public transport facilities in the country.

There are more than 60 motorcycle makers in the country with Honda still leading the market by a notable margin. Motorcycle manufacturers produced over 175,000 motorcycles per month on average, indicating a rapid increase in the usage of the transport vehicles.
