Recent competition means only 1/2 dozen local vehicle maker's left. 1 Tata and ho-hum HM only car makers left. Bajaj coming in yes with its RE:60. Mahindra, Force, Premier, Sonalika and maybe 1 or 2 more make 'jeep' type pick-up's.

Tata, Mahindra and Bajaj have world class marketing dept.'s though! China's a no-no there.

Carmakers like Maruti Suzuki India, Hyundai Motor India may step up diesel investment

Indian carmakers are likely to step up investments to make more diesel cars in order to stay in the game, as they battle a slump in demand triggered by a series of interest rate and fuel price hikes over the last few months. "Diesel is indeed an answer and we would soon finalise the strategy for a new plant," Maruti Suzuki India Chairman RC Bhargava told ET.

Maruti, India's largest carmaker by sales, had anticipated the market trend much earlier in 2007 when it started making diesel engines. Now, it wants to add more capacity. It has already inked a deal with Italian carmaker Fiat SpA to source three-lakh diesel engines and in addition is planning a second diesel engine plant at its Gurgaon facility.

Hyundai, world's fifth-largest carmaker which operates a wholly-owned subsidiary in India, is in the final stage of rolling out a Rs 400-crore greenfield plant that will make 1.5 lakh diesel engines every year. Once upstream, the diesel engine will cater to the buoyant domestic market and would be strapped to its popular hatchbacks like i10 and the smaller offering EON.

The company, which sells diesel models for its i20 hatchback and other bigger cars, imports all the engines from South Korea.

The boost comes from the growing customer's preference coupled with the budget sparing diesel vehicles from the much anticipated and feared tax hike that is expected to propel sales of such vehicles in the coming months. "Diesel is the biggest motivator to buy new cars in the current scenario," says Hyundai Motor India director (marketing & sales) Arvind Saxena.

Maruti's new plant will entail Rs 1,000 crore investment and would initially start with a capacity to produce one-lakh diesel engines per year. The company has already hiked the capacity at its Manesar plant to 3-lakh diesel engines per year to meet the exponential demand that still continues to outstrip supply.

The company has doubled production for diesel cars, but continuously fails to meet up with the rising demand. Its popular Swift hatchback enjoys five months of waiting, even after the company doubled the production at the Manesar plant to 18,000 cars/month.

Diesel now account for over 50% of the total cars sold in the country with more share in the pricier bigger vehicles like executive sedans and SUV's.

The rationale to establish and scale up diesel facilities comes on the back of pragmatic shift by Indian customers for cheaper price fuel that also offer better fuel mileage to petrol cars. Diesel is around 40% cheaper to petrol in the Indian market.

This lower priced diesel has pushed up demand in recent months and is largely responsible to bring back the Indian car market to positive territory after it had dipped into the negative in July last year and the reign continued till November.

Honda Motors eyes India as hub for diesel engines for compact cars

Around the same time the finance minister was reading out his Budget speech, Honda Motors was applying the final touches to its long-term diesel game plan for India, which will culminate in India emerging a global hub for diesel engines for compact cars.

With Pranab Mukherjee steering clear of imposing a cess of diesel-engine powered cars in his budgetary proposals, Honda Siel, the Japanese carmaker's Indian venture, can pursue its plans of creating a diesel engine portfolio, which is non-existent today.

The action has already begun at Honda's R&D centre in Tochigi, where prototypes of diesel engines of 1.4 to 1.5 litres for compact cars are currently being worked on by some of the company's best engineers from across the globe.

"Honda R&D is currently developing a small diesel engine. However, we do not have anything specific to share right now," Jnaneswar Sen, senior VP, sales & marketing, told ET. Those familiar with the strategy say that the diesel engine won't be ready in a hurry - not in 2012 for sure - as the development process has only just begun.

Once Honda Siel is in a position to power its compact car range - led by the Brio and the Jazz -- in India with diesel engines, it will move to the second phase of its strategy for the affordable fuel - of setting up an engine plant that can cater to the need of global markets.

But those aware of the plan stress that Honda will look to hit minimum volumes of 100,000 diesel cars, including exports, before committing to set up the plant. Currently Honda Siel has a factory with an installed capacity of 1 lakh cars (all petrol), which can be stretched to 1.2 lakh units.



Globally, Honda's diesel exposure is limited. It has one engine manufacturing facility in Swindon, UK which in December started producing a new version of the Civic compact model.

Recently Honda unveiled a 1.6 litre diesel engine at the Tokyo Motor Show to power the Civic for the European markets. It also has a 2.2 litre diesel engine that powers the Accord and CR-V for the European markets.

"While it is technically possible to downgrade both these engines, the low volumes of the Accord and CR-V (in India) do not justify it.

Also the engines for the European market have been developed taking into account the low sulphur content in the diesel there, unlike in India," says Sen.

Honda Siel, which has a market share of under 2% despite being in the country for over 15 years, has been overtaken by rivals like Volkswagen who came in much later.

The absence of diesel cars in its portfolio has clearly impacted sales even as the differential between petrol and the cheaper fuel widened over the past year.

In the first 11 months of fiscal year 2012, sales fell by 22% over the previous year's corresponding period because of the glaring gap in the portfolio as well as a shortage of components triggered by the previous year's tsunami in Japan and flash floods in Thailand that followed.

A renewed focus on India-and diesel--is a part of a fresh strategy for Honda, which has been slipping globally. In 2011, US sales fell by 7% over a year ago. To kick-start growth in India, the Japanese auto major has rejigged its top leadership team in the country.

It has appointed Hironori Kanayama as president & CEO of Honda Siel Cars India with effect from April, 2012. Kanayama, who was president of Honda Taiwan Motor Company, has been with Honda for over three decades and worked in crucial markets like China, Taiwan and Japan.

Kanayama's key mandate will to get Honda Siel's diesel strategy right over the medium to long term. "When Honda puts to work its mind, and its best engineers, you can be sure that its diesel engines will be formidable challengers," says Hormazd Sorabjee, editor Autocar India.

What`s the cost arbitrage there?

I know factory bldg. specialised labour (mistry's) is like $ 3-5 only, something like 35-50 times cheaper.

Said desi wog calculated 10x factor, so this $1 Billion turns into, is worth, is parity to. ... $ 10 Billion.

Pak forumers, indian forumers kindly feedback on this because it stands to reason.

the figures look legit..it is a $1 billion factory, considering the parity thing..you are right in estimating that the real effect of the investment will be in the range of 8-10 billion..

Just a thought, even PPP for us city folks must be different from N. Guj. hick land, bricks, mortar, labour. Maybe not steel or cement, they may be priced 'nationally', but the other stuff must be local. Bangladesh got a lot of clothing co.'s for same cheap labour, local costs. So it may even be more re: PPP in Bombay Vs. PPP in North Guj.

Maybe cheapest place in the world even to build cars. Desert and semi-arid brush is wotis ;).

Tata Motors shows new combat vehicle range

In line with its business strategy to enhance the scope of its defence business right up to frontline combat, Tata Motors has revealed a new Micro Bullet-Proof Vehicle (MBPV) at the ongoing DefExpo India 2012 at Pragati Maidan. This highly mobile combat vehicle is designed to assist the country’s elite forces in indoor combat at airports, railway stations and other such infrastructure.


Tata Motors launched four other defence vehicles – the 12x12 Prahaar Missile Carrier, Light Armoured Vehicle, Mobile Bunker and 6x6 7kl Refueler – and displayed a range of other concept vehicles, such as the Tata Quick Deployment Mobile Communication Terminal (QDMCT).

Speaking on the occasion, P M Telang, managing director - India Operations, Tata Motors, said: “The launch of our new combat and tactical vehicles and equipment, leveraged from our strength in design and development of a wide range of commercial vehicles, now enables us to cover the entire defence mobility spectrum. Tata Motors defence solutions already covers the complete range of logistics and armoured vehicles that have also been popular in supporting the police and paramilitary forces in counter-insurgency operations.”

Some of the highlights of the company’s products showcased at the DefExpo are: Tata Micro Bullet-Proof Vehicle (MBPV): The designed-for-indoor-combat MBPV has special features like bullet-resistant panels for protection, compact dimensions, with 4-wheel-assisted turning for easy movement within indoor confines and a high power-to-weight ratio. Firing ports have also been incorporated and it has an added capability of climbing stairs as well.

Tata 12x12 Prahaar Missile Carrier: This indigenous high mobility, all-terrain and all-wheel-drive LPTA 5252-12x12 vehicle is specifically for missile launcher-cum-carrier applications like integration of Prahaar, BrahMos and Nirbhay Missiles, in close coordination with R&DE – DRDO.


Tata Light Armoured Vehicle: This vehicle is designed to aid troops in counter-insurgency operations, as well as for patrolling the hinterland.

Tata Mobile Bunker: It is designed on the LPA 713 4-wheel-drive platform to ensure fast and safe movement of troops in Naxal-infested states and to act as a platform for retaliatory action. The vehicle is protected against gunfire, corresponding to ballistic protection of NIJ Level III.

Tata 6x6 7kl Refueler: This indigenous high mobility, all-terrain and all-wheel-drive refueler vehicle is designed for the Indian Armed Forces, paramilitary, State police, DPSUs and the aviation industry.

Tata LSV – QDMCT (Quick Deployment Mobile Communication Terminal): This is a shelter- based, self-contained vehicle-mounted communication system that provides wide area IP network. It offers reliable and secured IP connectivity for data, voice and video, between various nodes.

Tata 8x8 Water Purification System: Tata Motors has developed a mobile water decontamination system on the LPTA 3138 8x8, for all-terrain, all-weather operation in collaboration with M/s. WEW (Germany). This application is especially developed keeping the drinking water contamination problem faced by the armed forces. This water decontamination system is capable of purifying the most impure forms of water and makes it portable through Reverse Osmosis (RO) process.

Tata Motors also has on display its Safari Storme GS 800 4x4 aimed at transporting officers across locations in India. Also on offer is the Safari Storme Armoured vehicle which is equipped with latest state-of-art technology, additional armouring, strengthened chassis and suspension system, and enhanced braking efficiency to cater to VVIP movements. In addition to this is the Xenon Recce 4x4, developed for off-road patrolling usage by the armed forces.

AMW unveils defence vehicle range at 2012 Defence Expo

After showcasing the calibre of their civilian vehicle range at the 2012 Desert Storm rally, Asia Motor Works has unveiled its product portfolio for the armed forces

Asia Motor Works (AMW), the country’s third largest heavy vehicle manufacturer has unveiled three models for the use of the Indian defence services that include a 4x4 general service and logistics vehicle, a firefighting truck and a 6x4 heavy duty recovery vehicle. The vehicles that took two years in the making, will be manufactured at the company’s Bhuj facility. These will be on display at the 2012 Defence Expo at Pragati Maidan in Delhi from March 29 to April 1, 2012.

The general service and logistics vehicle will be available in different engine options ranging from 180PS to 270PS. Thanks to its permanent all-wheel drive system, it is capable of operating over difficult terrain. Another feature is its air-conditioned tilt-able cabin to ensure driver and passenger comfort.

The firefighting truck built as per stringent defence specifications features the same 180PS to 270PS engine range. The 6x4 heavy-duty vehicle will also be available in a 6x6 configuration with under-lift and move operation, lighter mounted equipment with a high lift capacity and a 210-degree rotation.

John Bregg, who has extensive experience in military vehicle development in Europe and Asia, is the moving force behind the AMW defence range. The company is ready with various vehicle programs including facilities for manufacturing, testing and prototyping of bespoke vehicle applications at Bhuj.

The Super Stallion HMV 8x8 is the new flagship of Ashok Leyland’s range of logistics vehicles. It has been specially configured to meet the army’s emerging requirement for vehicles with higher mobility and greater power to operate in challenging desert terrains. It is propelled by astate-of-the-art powerful 360 hp (265 kW) Neptune engine, that can crank up a torque of 1400 Nm.
