Ford India to Invest $142 Million to Build New SUV


The India unit of Ford Motor Co. said it is investing $142 million to build a new compact sport-utility vehicle that will be unveiled later Wednesday as part of its strategy to make the South Asian country a global manufacturing hub.

"The new product will be the second Ford global vehicle to be launched in India and is a part of eight that we plan to launch by the middle of this decade," Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India Pvt. Ltd., told reporters.

He said details such as engine specifications and the name of the vehicle will be announced at a press conference scheduled to start 1100 GMT.

A Ford official said earlier Wednesday that the SUV will be called the EcoSport, and is likely to be sold first in Asia and South America.

Ford India currently makes the hatchback Figo, sedans Fiesta Classic and Fiesta, and SUV Endeavour at a factory near Chennai in southern Tamil Nadu state. The plant has an annual capacity of 200,000 cars and 250,000 diesel engines.

Ford is investing $72 million until the middle of 2012 to raise capacity for diesel engines to 330,000. It is also investing 40 billion rupees ($750 million) to build a factory at Sanand in western Gujarat state.

Joe Hinrichs, Ford's group vice president and president for Asia-Pacific and Africa, said the new compact SUV will be eventually sold in 100 countries.

"We are still bullish on India. We expect significant growth as per capita income rises in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities," Mr. Hinrichs said.

He said the Indian car market is expected to become the third-biggest globally by the end of this decade.

Good job India. You are doing a great job in motor industry. It takes alot of hard work and dedication to reach the level where you guys are today. Do Tata or Bajaj make garbage trucks? Pakistan should really look into buying indian trucks/buses and construction machinery. I am not sure how reliable the bajaj and tata products are but they look good.

well you have identified the right potential of india for pakistan. i have always supported high trade between india and pakistan. indian motor industry can be a boon for a dying pakistani motor industry.

as far as reliability is concerned, tata and bajaj are known for their products. for further evidence do browse youtube for crash test of tatas and other indian motor companies

TATA and Ashok Leyland trucks are mostly bought as chassis and the body is built separately. Reliability is very good for South Asian conditions and depends on how they are maintained by their owners. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh use TATA and AL trucks and buses regularly since they are cheaper and rugged.

Auto Expo 2012: Daimler unveils first ‘Made in India’ truck |

Global automotive company Daimler is set to unveil its entire BharatBenz range on 2 March, 2012. They would be made on an already established truck platform like Mercedes-Benz Axor, a truck variant.

Global automotive company Daimler unveiled the first truck ‘Made in India’. The company announced plans on Wednesday to launch 17 to 18 products in the Bharat Benz brand range from the third quarter of 2012.

The company has already invested Rs 4,400 crore in India.

According to Marc Llistosella, MD and CEO of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, the BharatBenz range will be manufactured at the new plant in Oragadam near Chennai.

“We will unveil the entire range on 2 March, 2012,” Llistosella said at the Delhi Auto Expo.

Over 100 dealerships have been brought on board, said Llistosella.

According to Daimler, the construction of the plant on an area of 160 hectares is almost completed, and production trial runs for engines and transmissions have already begun.

“The production facility has a total dedicated investment of over Rs 44 billion (approximately €700 million). The plant’s initial production capacity will be 36,000 units per year and can be ramped up to 70,000 units per year,” it announced.


Daimler India also plans to increase supplies from domestic ancillary units. It currently has a localization of 85 per cent and cooperates with over 450 Indian suppliers. Localization reflects the proportion of components that has been source locally. With the falling valuation of the Indian rupee, imports have become costlier. Hence, companies are turning to domestic ancillaries for components in order to stay cost competitive.

“We are planning to increase localization to 90 per cent this year to be cost competitive,” Llistosella told reporters.


The new trucks are said to meet India’s BS III emissions standard that can be comparable to Euro III. They would be made on an already established truck platform like Mercedes-Benz Axor, a truck variant.

But, the future light and medium-duty range of trucks will be based on variants like the Fuso Canter and Fighter series respectively, Daimler announced.

“We are confident that the introduction of modern trucks with greater fuel efficiency, improved safety features, and competitive pricing will make us the game changer in the Indian trucking industry,” said Llistosella.

The company had unveiled BharatBenz, its exclusive new brand of trucks for the Indian market in February last year. It comes under the Daimler Group umbrella, which also has Mercedes Benz range of vehicles.

He also said that the trucks, which range from 6 to 49 tons in size, are also likely to be exported.

Tata Motors unveiled the new Tata Safari Strome, the latest iteration of the Safari, at the Auto Expo 2012. They also showed the Tata Ultra, the company’s new LCV & ICV range, and the Tata LPT 3723, a 5-axle rigid truck. These vehicles will be available from March 2012.

The Safari Storm looks like a facelifted version of the previous gen Safari, with a new front grille, bulge in the bonnet and different side panelling, though there have been some changes made to it on the handling front with new a 4-channel ABS with EBD, discs on all wheels and a new rack-and-pinion steering.

The Safari Storme has the same 2.2-litre 16-valve common rail (DiCOR) engine making 140PS of power and 320 Nm of torque with a variable geometry turbocharger. Also on display was the Tata Starbus Fuel Cell concept, an initiative by Tata Motors with support from the Government of India's dept. of scientific and industrial research, under the technology development and demonstration programme.
The vehicle will run on hydrogen and oxygen fuel cell that will charge a battery to power the vehicle forward, the only emission from this process being water. The motor will output a peak power figure of 250PS at 600-2100 rpm and a humongous 1050Nm at 800 rpm.

There were also a host of other concept vehicles to see at the Tata Motors stall. Notable mentions were the Nano CNG, the Indigo Manza diesel-electric hybrid car, the Starbus Fuel Cell (hydrogen) vehicle and the Magic Iris CNG.

Showcasing their alternative fuel technology and adding to their existing portfolio which includes the Indica Vista Electric and CNG-electric hybrid buses.

DC designed Supercar

Of of the most interesting new development presented at the New Delhi Auto Expo is the DC Design Avanti, India’s take at giving the world a supercar. The vehicle has the looks that allow it to deserve the aforementioned status, while its name is linked to the Studbaker Avanti from Tintin comics.

However, when it comes to the tech side, the Avanti falls into the sports car category: the vehicle will be launched with a four-cylinder turbocharged Ford engine that delivers 265 hp, with Design Avanto set to offer a Honda V6 delivering 400 hp subsequently. As for the gearbox, this is a six-speed dual-clutch unit.

The vehicle tips the scales at 1,560 kg (3,440 lbs), which is a pretty high value if we consider the fact that it makes extensive use of aluminum and fiberglass to keep the weight down. Thus, with the afotementioned Ford engine, the car needs 7 seconds to cover the 0 to 62 mph sprint.

However, the conclusion changes when we reach the pricing department - the Avanti is offered for 30 lahk rupees ($56,280 or EUR43,500 at the current exchange rates). DC Design plans to produce 200 cars per year, with the company set to gradually increase this to 2,000 units per year.

NEW DELHI, Jan 6 (Reuters) - India's Tata Motors is looking to expand operations in Myanmar by assembling and selling buses and light commercial vehicles there, the head of its Indian operations said.

Tata currently operates a truck assembly plant in Myanmar, but is now looking at a larger presence in the south east Asian nation as it moves quickly to implement political reforms and attract investments.

"At the moment we are assembling the larger commercial vehicles...we can look at buses and probably the smaller commercial vehicles," P.M. Telang, managing director of Tata Motors' India operations, told reporters.

The political opening has accelerated since last year when Myanmar's generals installed a new civilian government, released political prisoners and reached out to armed ethnic groups, but economic sanctions are yet to be lifted.

Tata Motors, whose range of cars extends from the ultra-cheap Nano, to British luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover, is also looking at the potential for manufacturing cars in Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar, Telang said.

The automaker sells its vehicles in Asia, Europe, Africa and South America.

Car sales have slowed down in its home country, hurt by rising finance rates and rising input costs. India's car sales, which grew 30 percent in the year ended March 2011, are expected to be flat in the current financial year.

Tata Motors posted a wider than expected fall in September quarter earnings due to high interest costs and exchange rate fluctuations.

The company has earmarked 30 billion rupees ($568 million) as capital expenditure for the financial year beginning on April 1, Telang said, almost similar to the current fiscal year's levels.
