Honda Cars India looks at Gujarat for 3rd manufacturing plant

Soon after it has begun production at its second manufacturing facility in the country, reports are suggesting that Honda Cars India might set up its third plant in Gujarat.

A report on Business Standard quotes a Gujarat government official who is said to be close to the development, saying that the company has shown interest in a 250 acre land parcel in Vithalapur. The town of Vithalapur is about 67 km from Sanand and 32 km from Hansalpur, where Maruti Suzuki’s contentious plant is set to come up.

Honda’s Tapukara plant for reference.

Interestingly, after following Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India to Tapukara in Rajasthan, Honda Cars is also following the two-wheeler manufacturer to Gujarat as HMSI announced that it would set up a facility near Ahmedabad, its fourth in the country.

Honda Cars in February began manufacturing cars at the Tapukara plant where it had been making engine and powertrain components since 2008. The plant currently manufactures the Amaze and could soon be joined by the Jazz, which is set to go into production in July.

Honda began production in Tapukara in February 2014.

The company has seen its sales skyrocket in 2013, going from 73,843 units in FY 2012-13 to 1,34,339 units in FY 2013-14, growing by a substantial 83.4 percent. The growth has mainly been driven by models like the Honda Amaze and Honda City. The Honda Mobilio MPV and the Honda Jazz have been confirmed for launch within the end of the current fiscal year.

by 2016, more than half of India's cars will be produced in Gujarat.

Force Motors to set up an engine facility in Tamil Nadu
Company plans to invest Rs 100 crore in the facility
Pune-based Force Motors to invest around Rs 100 crore to set up an engine manufacturing and testing facility in Tamil Nadu.

Prasan Firodia, managing director, Force Motors Ltd said that the new facility will be for a global passenger car manufacturer, with whom the company signed an agreement recently to supply engines.

While refusing to reveal the name of the OEM, he said going forward the facility can also cater to other OEMs in and around the plant.

The facility will be located at Anjur, Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu.

"Mainly it is a diesel engine facility, but if required we can also manufacture petrol engines," said Firodia.

Supply from this next generation plant is expected from January 2015, he said, while declining to share the capacity of the plant.

It may be noted, Force Motors has been assembling the Mercedes Benz engines and axles for all its C, E, S and M class cars and SUVs built in India.

Force Motors has been assembling and testing the Mercedes Benz engines for its passenger cars made in India, at the Urse plant. Since 1999, the company assembled over 42,000 engines, according to company's website.

Indian JCB is going big guns then.

Force Motors building engines for MB, wow !
I knew they did that for generations but to actually scale up to the next level is impressive.

I like all the mid size trucks. Hope all those coal and mining trucks stay on coal and mine pits. No more Tank style truck driving on narrow Indian roads. Phew!

With the new govt. coming and promises of mega infra., India's gonna be run over by trucks, construction trucks.

Conceived in Silicon Valley
weather-proof.jpg

The GenZe is another product that was conceived in Silicon Valley. The vehicle was developed in Palo Alto, California and is designed, engineered and manufactured in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Weather-proof

In the GenZe, the traditional instrument cluster makes way for a weather-proof, Bluetooth-enabled, 7-inch touchscreen display which shows how much charge you have, speed, approximate range and other parameters.

Urban transportation vehicle

GenZe is the first urban transportation vehicle to be provided by the Mahindra Group and the only two-wheeled electric vehicle of its kind in the United States

Opened a centre of excellence

The company also opened the Mahindra North American Technical Centre. The centre of excellence is 'focused on providing Mahindra with globally competitive product designs and technologies in support of its future product portfolio.'

Design capabilities

The centre can accommodate a total of 125 engineers and it works in collaboration with Mahindra's entire product development team

Smart move.

A US R&D center costs peanuts and gives fantastic RoI to parent M&M.

The Magic would be in in-house TechMahindra coming up with a seamless US R&D, Indo-Chin production and Indian BPO support platform. This gives M&M just that extra edge to play big in this fragmented yet niche market. Otherwise, 2 bit China-Taiwan Co.'s own this market and larger, traditional Toyota-Honda-VW-Fiat-GM types are nowhere near dominating.

Volkswagen is considering various options, including a compact sedan specially designed for India, a compact SUV and a compact hatchback
German auto giant Volkswagen group is planning to invest about €100 million (over Rs800 crore) in India to expand business, including launches of sedan and sports utility vehicle (SUV) in the compact segment along with a hatchback.
“At present, an investment of approximately €100 million is in the decision process for new models and for further localisation of parts and components,” Volkswagen India president and managing director Mahesh Kodumudi told PTI. While he did not share the timeline for the investment, he said “further large investments will accompany decisions for further new models for the Indian and export markets”.
“We intend to make these investments step-wise as decisions are realised. In summary, we intend to make these ‘further large investments’ over a period of the next few years before the end of this decade,” Kodumudi said.
When asked about new product launches and expanding Volkswagen’s offering in India, he said: “Volkswagen is currently considering various options, including a compact sedan specially designed for India, a compact SUV and a compact hatchback.” These are the fastest growing and largest segments in the Indian market, he added.
“We are close to making decisions on some of these new models and we will announce at the right time,” he said.
Besides, the company is also working on product upgrades of existing volume models Polo and Vento.
“Along with these, we are also considering the re-introduction of the new generation Passat (premium sedan) as soon as possible,” Kodumudi said.
Stressing on the importance of the Indian market, he said: “India remains a key strategic market for the Volkswagen group and success in this market is important for the Volkswagen group to achieve a leading position worldwide.”
The Volkswagen group had announced that it was aiming to be the number one auto maker in the world by 2018.
“India is expected to become one of the biggest automotive markets in the world and Volkswagen wants to be a part of this growth. As far as market share is considered, the Volkswagen group aims to achieve a high single digit market share before the end of this decade,” he said.

The Wolfsburg-based group, which is present in India through a wholly-owned subsidiary, has invested around €100 million in 2012-13, after the initial investment of €580 million by the auto major on its Pune-based manufacturing facility.

The group has five brands—Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Porsche andLamborghini—in the Indian market. The company employs about 5,000 employees in the country. PTI
