Well the world has moved on to 5.56..may be you should too.
Well, it is true. The 5.56 NATO rounds are generally more superior as far as assault rifles (AR) are concerned.
Although, 7.62 ones aren't outdated or anything. Both types have advantages depending on the situation. But in most cases, 5.56 rounds yield better results.
Of-course, many machine gun types today still use the 7.62 with the exception of the like of the M-249 SAW.

Well because of recent experiences in the Afghan War and in Iraq - the Jury is still out on the 5.56 ! Hence why the Americans, I think, are designing another caliber that is between the 5.56 and the 7.62 !
They already have:-
SCAR-L, Mk 16 Mod 0 (capable of holding 5.56 rounds):
