And they say that "WE(US)" are the world leaders in "DISARMAMENT" or rather i should say "THIS-IS-ARMAMENT"....

Cutting-edge aerospace research leads to expanded knowledge that is useful beyond weapons.

Besides, let me turn this around for a moment... substitute "U.S." or "America" with China or Chinese everywhere in this report.

Mach 20 missile, China can hit anything on earth within an hour

Chinese researchers have been working for nearly a decade on an audacious plan to strike anywhere on the planet in less than an hour. Wednesday could prove to be the do-or-die moment for that plan.

At approximately 7 a.m. PDT, a Dong Feng-31 rocket is scheduled to lift off from the Wuzhai launch site. It will puncture the atmosphere, and then release an experimental aircraft. That aircraft, known as the Flying Dragon II Hypersonic Technology Vehicle, will then come hurtling back to Earth at nearly 20 times the speed of sound, impacting near the Taklimakan desert, approximately 4,100 miles away. Total flight time: about 30 minutes.

Everyone would be applauding and cheering. "YES! GOOD JOB CHINA!"

USA yet again proves that there is no such thing as world peace in today's world....
I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that the world averages 30-40 conflicts, mostly minor, in any era. Since when is world peace even existed? I know you like to blame US for every ills in the world, but it would make your criticism, if we are to be generous and call it that, more credible if you can explain how are we responsible for the current mess in Somalia. Looks like the muslims there are doing a damn good job at promoting peace, no?

can this missile remain in earth orbit for months? like R-36orb ?

The development of the R-36 missile complex for use with the 8К69 fractional-orbit missile ("FOBS") began on April 16, 1962. Such a missile provides some advantages over a conventional ICBM. The range is limited only by the parameters of the orbit that the re-entry vehicle has been placed into, and the re-entry vehicle may come from either direction, compelling the enemy to build considerably more expensive anti-missile systems. Due to the possibility of placing the warhead in orbit and keeping it there for some time, it is possible to reduce the time required to strike to just a few minutes. It is also much more difficult to predict where the warhead will land, since while the re-entry vehicle is on orbit, it is a very small object with few distinguishing marks and is hard to detect; moreover, since the warhead can be commanded to land anywhere along the orbit's ground track, even detecting the warhead on orbit does not allow accurate prediction of its intended target.

I thought US of A is finished according to some people on this forum? :P

Who is making all these weapons then? lool

The US is trying to operate a similar doctrine of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) in the Cold War. But they have revived it to- "we have such overwhelming power we kill you if you step out of line".

I think it has been said that since the 1800s there has only been THIRTY MINUTES when there was no conflict anywhere in the world. World peace is a lovely pipe dream but that is, sadly, all it is.

The human condition strikes again.

Bleeding-Edge Technology, really. Let's wait for the results, though...

My favorite super weapon are the "Rods from God". Who knows how this one is coming along. This article is from 2004:

Rods from God

Space-launched darts that strike like meteors
By Eric Adams Posted 06.01.2004 at 4:30 pm 3 Comments

This technology is very far out—in miles and years. A pair of satellites orbiting several hundred miles above the Earth would serve as a weapons system. One functions as the targeting and communications platform while the other carries numerous tungsten rods—up to 20 feet in length and a foot in diameter—that it can drop on targets with less than 15 minutes’ notice. When instructed from the ground, the targeting satellite commands its partner to drop one of its darts. The guided rods enter the atmosphere, protected by a thermal coating, traveling at 36,000 feet per second—comparable to the speed of a meteor. The result: complete devastation of the target, even if it’s buried deep underground. (The two-platform configuration permits the weapon to be “reloaded” by just launching a new set of rods, rather than replacing the entire system.)

The concept of kinetic-energy weapons has been around ever since the RAND Corporation proposed placing rods on the tips of ICBMs in the 1950s; the satellite twist was popularized by sci-fi writer Jerry Pournelle. Though the Pentagon won’t say how far along the research is, or even confirm that any efforts are underway, the concept persists. The “U.S. Air Force Transformation Flight Plan,” published by the Air Force in November 2003, references “hypervelocity rod bundles” in its outline of future space-based weapons, and in 2002, another report from RAND, “Space Weapons, Earth Wars,” dedicated entire sections to the technology’s usefulness.

If so-called “Rods from God”—an informal nickname of untraceable origin—ever do materialize, it won’t be for at least 15 years. Launching heavy tungsten rods into space will require substantially cheaper rocket technology than we have today. But there are numerous other obstacles to making such a system work. Pike, of GlobalSecurity.org, argues that the rods’ speed would be so high that they would vaporize on impact, before the rods could penetrate the surface. Furthermore, the “absentee ratio”—the fact that orbiting satellites circle the Earth every 100 minutes and so at any given time might be far from the desired target—would be prohibitive. A better solution, Pike argues, is to pursue the original concept: Place the rods atop intercontinental ballistic missiles, which would slow down enough during the downward part of their trajectory to avoid vaporizing on impact. ICBMs would also be less expensive and, since they’re stationed on Earth, would take less time to reach their targets. “The space-basing people seem to understand the downside of space weapons,” Pike says—among them, high costs and the difficulty of maintaining weapon platforms in orbit. “But I’ll still bet you there’s a lot of classified work on this going on right now.”
