Lyari Operation

Among those who fell in Lyari, there was a ‘Pele’ too

KARACHI:
The Lyari operation may have halted for now but reminders of the destruction it caused, financially and of lives, are etched onto the residents’ minds.

Among the 40-odd people killed, there was one Mohammad Asif, nicknamed ‘Pele’ for his talent with a football as a football love-affair came to an abrupt and brutal end during the police operation. The police is being blamed for the bullet wound on the head as he attempted to rescue children on the street as a sudden exchange of shots broke out.

As the dust settles, residents estimate the damage and tales begin to emerge with regards to the sports community which has produced a number of legends.

The great athletes produced by Lyari include the only Olympics medallist in boxing, Hussain Shah, Asian Games gold medallist Mehrullah Lassi and football legends like Turab Ali, Abdul Ghafoor and Captain Umer.

But as locals organised indoor foosball events, and as boxing clubs were used by locals gangs to escape the police, Asif met his tragic fate. He was due to get married after Eid.

Playing for the Lyari Labour Welfare Centre (LLWC) Football Club, he earned the nickname despite being in his mid-thirties.

“Asif had no links or interest in politics and football was his only passion,” said Asif’s teammate Abdul Rehman. “His death has closed a chapter of football enthusiasm which is very unfortunate for us. Asif was very talented, it was because of his skills and passion that we used to call him Pele.

He was unlucky not to get exposure at a higher level because he had all the required ingredients to become a top footballer.”

Another teenage footballer Asif Ali was injured during the operation. The 17-year old, a member of the Young Kalakot Club, was shot in the thigh but survived, vowing to revive his career after recovering.

“My passion for football won’t die despite the bullet wound,” he said.

Association wants an end to killing spree

An international boxer Javed Jaan was also injured in the operation as a senior official of the Sindh Football Association (SFA) called for an end to the operation.

“The people of Lyari are passionate about sports,” said football organiser and the SFA official Mohammad Yaqoob. “You can gauge their love from the fact that they restarted sports activities as soon as the guns went silent. Sports have saved them from many criminal activities including drug addiction. There might be criminals living in Lyari but not all those living here are involved. There must be some other way they can tackle these criminals which will spare innocent lives.”

Unfortunatly our media, is blacking out everything, which appears good for pakistan!
Yes I guss , they are in, bt I think , their fate would be decided after further, investigation?
Head money can be anounced, on anyones head by, fedrl or provincial govts, but its investigation , which can hunt big fishes down, & in karachi, we need to catch big, fishes?
Well , nice to see you around, you were a hell of a big gun, we are missing on pdf.
Thanks

There is a need to establish that if those three guys of BLA were nabbed after the Liyari episode of they were already in custody and were missing persons. In both cases it is alarming, if we accept that they were nabbed after the episode then serious questions should should be raised against these lists ( one of balochistan minister already confessed that few ministers are involved in kidnapping for ransom) and if they were already in custody then this SSP should be taken to task for misleading the nation. I dont know why media is quiet.

KARACHI, June 8: A man said to be a member of the Kuchhi Rabita Committee (KRC) was shot dead in a Lyari locality on Friday evening, police said.

They said that the killing occurred in Moosa Lane where Irfan Soomro, 37, who was sitting outside his residence, was targeted by three men who reportedly came there on foot.

Baghdadi SHO Ghulam Nabi Afridi said: “They [assailants] might have used a motorcycle to escape from the scene, but initial reports suggest that they were on foot when they carried out the killing”.

The victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, the police said.

He suffered bullet wounds in the head and chest.

The area SHO said that the victim was said to be a member of the KRC.

Karim Kuchhi, a KRC spokesman, told Dawn that the victim was not only a member of the KRC but also an office-bearer of the Pakistan People’s Party (city area).

He said that on Friday morning the PPP took out a small rally in support of setting up of reverse osmosis (RO) plants in Lyari and the victim was present in the programme.

Man found shot dead in Korangi

The body of a man, stuffed in a gunny bag, was found in Korangi early on Friday morning, police said.
They said the victim had been shot in the head.

The body was found in Mehran Town, they added.

The victim was identified as Noor Rehman, 30, at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre with the help of some documents
found on him.

A duty officer at the Korangi Industrial Area (KIA) police station said that the victim was a resident of Kunwari Colony,
Manghopir and originally hailed from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

It appeared that the victim had been kidnapped and shot dead somewhere else and the body was thrown at the scene, the
police said.

Police were immediately not sure about the motive of the murder. Till late in the night, no case pertaining to the killing was
registered at the KIA police station.

The victim was a nephew of a local leader of the Awami National Party, Anwerzeb Musakhel, according to a party press
release.

The funeral prayer was held in Kunwari Colony and he was buried in the Manghopir graveyard.

Gangs of Karachi: The lone ranger of Lyari gunned down with brother

KARACHI:
Before Lyari had heard of Arshad Pappu and Rehman Dakait, they knew Haji Abdul Salam Baloch alias Haji Salamu. Since the time he started peddling the neighbourhood streets in the late 1980s, he had gained instant notoriety.
On Sunday afternoon, Salamu, his brother Shahzad alias Charlie, nephew Kashif and an accomplice were shot. Their bodies were taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi. Tension gripped the area and a heavy contingent of Rangers was called in to control the situation and catch the suspects who managed to escape.
Police suggested that the triple murders took place over Salamu’s refusal to join the banned Peoples Amn Committee (PAC). An eye-witness claimed that a meeting had been arranged between Haji Salamu and Lyari gangster Sheraz Comrade’s group to sort out differences. The venue was near Haji Salamu’s house in 500 Quarters, Musharraf Colony, within the jurisdiction of the Mauripur police station. Around a dozen men from Sheraz Comrade’s group parked outside Haji Salamu’s house and opened fire after he refused to openly support the PAC.
In the 1980s, Haji Salamu, 56, was a notorious drug lord. He used to operate from his house in Chakiwara with his brother. A source claimed that Haji Salamu never wanted to take part in the gang war between Rehman Dakait and Arshad Pappu so he moved to Mauripur in 2002.
“He was one of the prominent drug lords in the area,” said the source. “However, because of the gang war, his business was getting affected. The Dakait and Arshad Pappu groups were forcing him to take sides and he decided that it was better to move away before it was too late.” Haji Salamu had spent more than half of his life in jail as several cases had been registered against him. One of his brothers, Nasir, was killed in an alleged police encounter in 1993.
“After he moved to Mauripur, he had kept a low profile,” said the official. “He started dealing in drugs again but it just wasn’t the same. They didn’t have the same amount of manpower or strength.” In the last couple of months, especially after Arshad Pappu was released from prison, Haji Salamu and his men were being pressurised into taking sides again.
A member from Haji Salamu’s gang said that the attack was not unexpected as Haji Salamu had been warned of dire consequences if he did not comply.
West Zone SSP Amir Farooqi told The Express Tribune that initial investigation suggested that the suspects had arrived to overcome differences but opened fire at Haji Salamu and his family when he refused to do what they asked. “The Comrades were upset that Haji Salamu did not play a more active role in the Lyari operation,” he said. “I do not know if Haji Salamu was supporting Arshad Pappu’s group but he wasn’t supporting the others either.” He added that 9mm pistols were used in the attack and raids were being carried out to track down the suspects. According to PAC leader Zafar Baloch, the PAC has no link with the attack on Haji Salamu. “They were all criminals and were killed over a personal dispute,” he said while talking to The Express Tribune. “They were not innocent you know. In the last couple of months Haji Salamu’s gang was active and using [PAC chief] Uzair Baloch and [Lyari gangster] Baba Ladla’s name to extort money.”
