According to press reports the front-runners for the post of ISI chief include Chief of General Staff Lt Gen Wahid Arshad, Karachi Corps Commander Lt Gen Muhammad Zahirul Islam and Peshawar Corps Commander Lt General Khalid Rabbani. All three are to retire in 2014.

Lt General Zahir-ul-Islam had a previous appointment with ISI before becoming the Commander V corps.

So he is justified.

Met him at golf club once. A gentleman indeed.

But i guess to head ISI..you need to be a bit crazy......

when one get a new post,it is for 3 years. so they will get a 1-yr extension under the rules to complete their terms. if CoAS gets his way, then its the CGS, Lt.Gen, Waheed Arshad (buddy factor)

because the general is CC V Corps and Jacobabad falls in his AoR.

Thanks for the info on how long the term is. Needless to say the appointment of one of the most important jobs in Pakistan's history will be not taken easily and lets hope the right man is promoted - as it will be paramount in Pakistan's future.

And does buddy factor play a part in this? Does the CoAS have full say in this regard?

it can be a factor as he has recently been appointed to that post

CoAS makes the recommendations thru the MoD.

Wouldn't it be an advantage to have a committee of lets say 3 to form a quorum in making primary decisions. This would result in Pakistan benefiting from the experience of all 3 gentleman we have mentioned above. The position is so so important and we could do with every bit of brain matter we could put together?

Oz, can u explain the "not needed" comment? Is it because decisions about which terrorist group to support or deny support to are taken at higher or lower levels than the ISI chief or that such decisions are taken by a different "agency" outside his purview?
