Kolkata, March 20 (IANS) A premier nuclear physics institute here has come up with India's first indigenously designed microchip that will facilitate research on the Big Bang theory in Geneva's CERN, the world's largest particle physics laboratory.

Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics' (SINP) invention, a product of collaborative research with Semiconductor Complex Ltd of Chandigarh and Aligarh Muslim University, will not only help the global research taking place at CERN but also benefit common people in several medical and non-medical services.

'The microchip, Multiplexed ANAlog Signal (MANAS) processor, can be used to detect the smallest tumours which, sometimes, cannot be detected by MRI or CAT scan. Since it's a heavily powerful imaging device it can also detect tissue tumours,' Sukalyan Chattopadhyay, project head of MANAS at SINP, told IANS on the sidelines of a press conference.

'Its cost of manufacturing is only $10. So it will not only give accurate results to detect cancerous tumours but would also bring down scanning expenses.'

He said this chip would also help in airport scanning as it can capture digital images of the smallest particles located inside any object.

Bikash Sinha, director of SINP, said this microchip would help scientists find out from where the particles are coming and where they are going.

'With this we can learn about the evolution of earth till date,' Sinha said, adding this was the first step towards indigenous chip development in India.

The MANAS processor has been internationally accepted as the best possible imaging device. It has 16 channels and 10,000 transistors in it. It can also take 1,000 images in a single second. It will be used at CERN in Geneva to study what exactly happened one microsecond after the Big Bang.

This chip has already been sent to Singapore, France, Italy and Russia for tests.

Current understanding says the universe was created about 14 billion years ago when the Big Bang created space and time. In physical cosmology, the Big Bang is the scientific theory that the universe emerged from a tremendously dense and hot state billions of years ago.

'We want this chip to be used for the betterment of people in several medical and non-medical services. But for that there should be an industry to take up this technology. Till now no one has come to use this technology in medical or non-medical sectors,' said Chattopadhyay.

He said if any company showed interest, SINP was hopeful of sharing the technology of this imaging device for the benefit of common people.

What Linux distro is recommended? I guess it must be a special type of Linux distro since its not x86 architecture?
Can the Loongson based computers have normal LAN/Wireless Lan connection etc?

TSMC is Taiwan. And btw, Kirin is not the PC-based microchip.

I can assure you that TSMC is 100% Chinese。

Taiwan's semiconductor industry is growing anxious amid claims that China has begun an aggressive campaign to poach Taiwanese talent with salaries 10 times higher than those offered locally, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.

The 120 billion yuan (US$19.5 billion) Chinese campaign to develop its own semiconductor industry on the mainland was said to have been the hottest topic of conversation among the 300 international experts at the recent SEMICON Taiwan, the top event in the country for microelectronics manufacturing.

In a bid to stop local IC (integrated circuit) designers and researchers from leaving Taiwan for enticing offers on the mainland, the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association appealed to Taiwanese vice premier Mao Chi-kuo last Friday for the Executive Yuan to support worker bonuses and stock options, as well as increasing cash resources, taxes relief and other benefits.

Mao was said to have responded favorably to the suggestions, in particular tax relief. He said it is important to keep local talent, adding that there will be no tax to collect if workers have all gone overseas.

Industry insiders claim that China's aim is to slow down the number of semiconductor imports from overseas by creating its own self-sufficient production chain. Some commentators say that the ultimate goal is to develop a Chinese version of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world's largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, while others have gone as far as saying that China intends to "annihilate" TSMC and fellow Taiwanese semiconductor giant MediaTek :coffee::rolleyes1::no:

Those who are uneducated think that it is easy to do that without getting caught. When you can produce semiconductors with line widths bigger than 1 meter (no, drawing lines on sand with a stick isn't semiconductor patterning), start talking.

Much Faster data transmission, very reduced power consumption as copper is replaced with silicon optic nanocable . Performance in ibm 90 nm silicon photonic chip was 7x compared to other 90 nm with 2-4x reduced power consumption.

Silicon photonics is incredibly hard to pull off, but if anyone can do it, it is us. We don't think inside the box and we don't let others think for us, unlike certain countries here who rely on credit, donations and foreign investment for even producing clothes.
