Why is the ranking on medal count based on gold instead of all the medals?

Opening Olympic London 2012 ceremony was just okay...NOT AT ALL OUTSTANDING as British Press Media...BBC, ITV, Sky tv show to world audience. There is so much 'hypocrisy' in Britain to what they show to world and what really happens in UK. All to lie and lure tourists and investors abt UK's so-called greatness.

Britain is failing economically, racism, banks cheating and now in a new deeper financial recession. But such things are NEVER told to world y??

Ranking of gold takes precedence over ranking in total because most people cant remember second bests. Gold medallists get more monetary returns such as bigger reward, commercial sponsors etc.
