One woman was killed and five other people were injured in a knife attack in central London's Russell Square, London Metropolitan Police said.

Authorities said a suspect, a 19-year-old man, is in police custody at a hospital.
The woman killed is in her 60s, authorities said.

Mental health is a "major factor" in the investigation but terrorism remains a line of inquiry.
"As a precautionary measure tomorrow, Londoners will wake up and in the morning they will notice increased police presence on the streets, including armed officers," Mark Rowley, the Scotland Yard assistant commissioner, told reporters. "This is there to provide reassurance and safety. We ask the public to remain calm, vigilant and alert."

Officials briefed on the investigation told CNN earlier that based on early evidence, investigators believe the incident was a terror attack.

"The fact that they're even mentioning terrorism leads me to believe that some of the witnesses and some of the victims may have said that this guy may have made some statements while he was carrying out the attack," former FBI agent Bobby Chacon said.

"The normal posture is to calm the public and say we don't have any information that it's terrorism yet."
Counterterrorism police are supporting the investigation, but not leading it, authorities said later.
Police were called in at 10:33 p.m. Wednesday local time after reports of a man "seen in possession of a knife injuring people," authorities said in a news release.

A stun gun was used on the suspect, and he was arrested less than 10 minutes later, authorities said.
The officials also said one injured victim appears to be American.
The incident comes just hours after authorities announced London would increase its presence of armed police after recent terror attacks in Europe.

Located in the Bloomsbury district of west central London, Russell Square is close to the main buildings of the University of London and the British Museum.

The area is popular with tourists because of its proximity to museums and central London. It also boasts many upscale hotels and homes.

Though it's located in central London -- which is usually busy on summer nights -- Russell Square isn't particularly bustling when compared to other nearby neighborhoods, which are home to more restaurants and bars.

In the terror attacks of July 7, 2005, the underground subway line running close to Russell Square was hit by the most devastating of the four bombs.

Right, he is mentally disturbed but his targets were all Westerners, and the area he committed the act is full of tourists. It may very well be the case that he is crazy but other issues should not be ruled out.
Also what the hell is a so called "Norwegian" national of Somali decent doing here? New information has come through that this horror "migrated" from Norway in 2002.
Also one thing that really makes me angry is the sheer levels of migrants, from war torn countries, we have had come in through European passports. The UK has no connection with these countries, especially Somalia.
We have no idea who or what these people are about.

One of our American friends has also lost her life. RIP hun, we are so sorry that you came as our guest and this happened to you.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a US citizen was killed and five other people were injured in a knife attack in central London.

Police believe the attack in Russell Square on Wednesday was "spontaneous", with victims "selected at random".

The woman who died was thought to be in her 60s. The injured people were from Britain, America, Israel and Australia.

Police arrested a 19-year-old Norwegian national of Somali origin. They say there is no evidence of radicalisation.

The Met Police's assistant commissioner for specialist operations, Mark Rowley, said the investigation "increasingly points" to the attack being "triggered by mental health issues".

Mr Rowley had earlier said the force was considering terrorism as "one line of inquiry for us to explore".

He told a press conference it had been necessary to "consider all of possibilities" following recent terror attacks across Europe.

Mr Rowley, Britain's most senior counter-terrorism officer, added that an address had been searched by officers in north London on Thursday morning and another will be searched in south London.

The man was arrested after a Taser was discharged by an officer.

Scotland Yard said two other women and three men received various injuries in the attack, which happened near the Imperial Hotel.

Two from the group remain in hospital while the other three have since been discharged. None have life-threatening injuries.

After receiving treatment in hospital, the arrested man, who was detained in Bedford Place, is now in police custody in south London.

Mr Rowley earlier said the force's homicide command was leading the investigation into the attack, with support from the counter-terrorism unit.

Norwegian police said in a statement that the man had emigrated from Norway in 2002 and they were assisting London police.

People kill each other all the time around here with knives, stab each other in clubs, before or after football games yet it doesn't make the news. Right now every media is waiting for a bad thing made by a muslim to interpret it like a terror attack and find any link to ISIS. :D
