The FGM-148 Javelin is an American Man-Portable Fire-and-Forget Anti-Tank Missile

Other multi-million dollar deals also in the offing

US defence major Lockheed Martin is planning to revive its pending bid to sell Javelin missiles under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign.

The plan to buy Javelin missiles from Lockheed Martin was shelved a couple of years ago.

However, the proposal got a fresh lease of life when Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar visited the US last month where US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter pushed for the deal, sources told BusinessLine.

Sources said Lockheed Martin is even ready to co-produce these shoulder-fired anti-tank guided Javelin missiles in India, albeit at a later stage. For this, the US government is also planning to put the deal under US-India Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) to expedite the process, sources said.

But to revive the deal, the US government will have to grant its permission to Lockheed Martin once it gets a request for buying these missiles from the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The US had been trying to sell these missiles to the Indian armed forces since 2013. However, the plan was put on the backburner when the Defence Ministry chose to buy Israel’s Spike anti-tank guided missile in 2014.

Beside Javelin, Lockheed Martin is also upbeat on the delivery of 123 Naval Multi Role Helicopters (NMRH) for the Indian Navy, world’s largest tender for such helicopters. The Defence Ministry had placed the order in December 2014.

Aircraft Deal

The endlessly flexible Lockheed C-130 Hercules is an absolutely astounding aircraft that can adapt to any challenge thrown its way

Lockheed Martin is also bullish on the $5.3-billion C-130J aircraft deal, which includes delivery of 29 C-130J-30s stretch models, 13 HC130 Js, 30 MC-130Js and 6 KC-130 J refuellers.

The Maryland-headquartered firm is in advance negotiations for the Aegis ballistic missile defence system that can attack land targets, submarines and ships simultaneously.

UAVs

It is also in talks with the government for the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) such as the Stalker or Desert Hawk III for both military as well as civilian use.

The company is also looking at offering Tethered Aerostat System to India. These, typically, come fixed in a radar to provide low-cost and wide-area surveillance.

It also planning a substantial foray into areas such as cyber-security and renewable energy, officials said.

They are all part of the DTTI which is contingent upon India signing the foundational agreements. This is one of the reasons why may deals with Russia have been on hold. If these deals go through with US under DTTI, many of the Russian delas may be scrapped starting with MTA.

check out pages 7 to 10. Javelin has gotten way better in my opinion. multi purpose warhead effective against armor targets and more lethal against non armored targets

lighter sleeker looking CLU

The problem was America refused 100% TOT on the algorithms, while Israel agreed , so we went for Spike.

I don't think that part ( C130s) was for India though, LM has signed a big contract for these for Saudis, may be its for them.
Makes no sense about C130 air refuellers .

you can't have everything as MRCA deal with Dassault showed, but you can't deny Javelin would be a game changer in Kashmir and fighting on the Siachen Glacier.

and I like Spike more than Javelin as well.

Of course, but the planners here thought that if Israel is offering it, why not go for it. No doubt about Javelins capabilities.
There is a proposal from US about co development of next generation Javelin, maybe our planners decide to buy a few Javelins at present and join the program.

Though we already picked the Spike and thats the end of that?

And that is the way its gonna be...... though its good to see the Lockheed Martin Salesmen again chasing up Indian Business. They have to beat the Spike offer; which they have not done so far and Spike is now even part of a JV with Bharat Forge to be made in India! :D

Do not be so hasty to jump to that conclusion. the C-130 refueller are simply great for refuelling Helicopters AAR. The AAC will love them for their Apaches, Chinooks and what-not; even the IN will like to get them for their long range Helos at sea. Do not rule them out absolutely! :D
