I have doubts on how much we have learnt. I was speaking to the guy incharge of karnaphuli tunnel project last month, he said the chienese keep secrecy of their design and work and do not want to share the know how. Even they have their design details and paperwork in mandarin so our engineers cannot pickup. Same maybe true for the bridge I fear.

But definitely the engineers who worked must have learned heaps. One day we may help other countries build their mega projects, insallah.


Maybe she hasnt desided yet which name to put. Hers or her son's.

The general level of English proficiency in China remains low, even today. Almost all documentation (even engineering research) remains in Mandarin, as far as I know.

I don't think the Chinese were trying to hide their designs or technology.

The main bridge design was made by AECOM, in Dallas, TX anyway.

However MBEC folks completed the work efficiently and I'd say sooner than other countries (including India) could ever have.

Projects like Mongla-Khulna rail link and Rampal Maitry Powerplant are far simpler and smaller in scope but Indian contractors are highly inefficient and drag them on for ages, increasing both scope, ETA and budget by sometimes 300-500%.

Project deliverables should naturally include blue prints in English or Bangla. It is also necessary for maintenance purpose.

They may keep a Mandarin version so it's easy for the Chinese engineers to communicate between themselves.

I just hope BD engineers learn enough to at least build a medium size Bridge under the guidance of foreign consultants.

Yeah they have been around a while I guess....

They do only large projects, including bridges and flyovers, just to let you know.

A lot of their work is govt. work, hence fairly plain-Jane looking, However they had completed the Dhaka-to-Mawa freeway (Padma Bridge approach road as well as a lot of the resort bldgs. in Mawa).

Long way to go to even reach Indian capabilities - much less Chinese.

But last five years have seen dramatic improvements in engineering capabilities and high volume civil engineering automation equipment usage.

Just as an example, most major local contractors nowadays use high volume boom-enabled concrete pumps delivering plasticizer-added cement mixes to worksites. This was unthinkable ten years ago. Ditto with motorized cement surface finishers etc.

Also precision is added to the mix - a lot of contractors now specialize in superflat factory and storage floors for pallet storage rack and machinery installation. As well as cement floor polishing and grinding equipment (after it hardens).

2 person does in motorcycle accidents on the bridge on first day of operation. Now they banned motorcycle until they have cctv and speed cameras get installed.
