Local auto vendors seek to develop parts for aircraft, tank

KARACHI: Local auto vendors are willing to start development of parts for tanks and aircraft manufacturing.

Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) Chairman Mashood Ali Khan in a recent meeting with senior officials of Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) informed them that many of their member companies are matured to work for the aerospace sector and expected to play their role in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance.

PAAPAM members also met Chairman Pakistan Aerospace Complex Air Marshal Arshad Malik at an event held to commemorate the launch of Pakistan Aerospace Council (pac) as a platform for networking between Pakistani high-tech sector and its clients in Pakistan as well as the global market place.

Mr Malik gave an overview of the excellent order book and work load of PAC Kamra and its ability to localiSe aircraft assemblies required in military and trainer planes produced at Kamra.

He said Kamra valued specialist companies from the automotive sector who could take a step further into aerospace component manufacturing.

Imtiaz Rastgar, member PAC board, stressed on the need for cluster formation in the aerospace and high-tech sector and how this could lead to meeting local needs while the global market offers immense possibilities for similar parts.

He said there are over 2,000 aeronautics, defence and space related companies in Europe, employing 750,000 people with turnover of 190 billion euros. These companies import large quantities of parts and Pakistani high-tech sector companies mentored through the CBI Export Coaching Programme are already making respectable exports to Europe.

Excellent, his must be supported by HIT and all other responsible organisations and individual officials. This is called vendor development...a key ingredient of indigenous development. No industry can develop everything, thus availability of a wide industrial base paves the way for high projects.

No expects them to build a car from scratch the issue with these guys are the Toyota and Honda they are making are absolute crap compared to one's in international market

This is the mindset of 99% Pakistani's.
The only difference comes in when they put in local parts, that the quality goes down.
We will just not accept any local input. So we declare them crap.

This is why no local vendor is ready to produce a car locally, because he knows it won't sell.
There are other factors/interests also, which do not let local production feasible.

no mate issue arises when the remove the features from the car to increase their share of profit.
take Toyota xli for example the pakistani model of this car doesn't even have basic safety features like airbags and ABS brakes and we are talking about a car which cost around 1.8 million.
i recently bought a honda civic 2016 and you will be crying after seeing the finish and fixing issues with the rear glass of this 3 million rs costing car
these guys are nothing but corner cutting crooks.i say stay away from them

Indeed a good step to follow for growth but there are some points to consider.

Automotive industry is not making some high-end vehicles in Pakistan.
Most of them are just doing assembling however some parts are also made locally by using hight tech machinery.
They may produce some Defence related parts but there is strong monitoring required for the following reasons:

1) Some defence techs or procedures or sensitive info may be leaked.
2) Defence products require high quality which has to be ensured via certifying the production units.
3) It would be better if they are tasked to manufacture some parts or engines which are not currently being produces locally.

That's the way to go... Automotive industry would be able to contribute to localization of components thereby reducing turnaround time for spares and also absorb critical technology over time ... Great effort.

You have a point. But making complete cars and making components is hell lot different tasks. If they have required tools/machines to make components (cars, tanks, crafts, etc.) given that they are provided with drawings, tech support, and raw materials, that capacity needs to be utilized. Having sub-contractors for producing sub-systems, components, etc. is a standard procedure even in developed countries including China. You develop the whole down-stream industry for manufacturing big/complex items. I think it's a very welcome development. We certainly need to explore it.

Dude.. this is how Indian companies have started learning.. of source there are bigger companies involved.. but look at Mahindra defense... Tata defense production... they learnt using this path and are pretty successful...
