Loan has been approved for Bangladesh for YAK-130 and Su-27

Russia's state intermediary agency for export/imports of defense-related product or Rosoboronexport representative Sergey Kornev has expressed: "As far as I know the loan has been approved. Within its amount Bangladesh can choose the number of planes it will buy and their modifications". Kornev added that "Russia will grant a loan to Bangladesh to buy 12 Yak-130 planes and Su-27 jet fighters". He did not mention the sum of the loan. He was speaking at the China Airshow 2012 which is underway in the Chinese city of Zhuhai.

Bangladesh’s air force is interested in buying Russia’s jet trainer/light attack aircraft Yak-130 and Su-27SM2.

For that Mig-29SMT with a range more than 2000 km should suffice for a strike role.

Going for Su-27 doesn't make sense because:

1.) BAF don't have prior experience in handling/maintaining heavyweight fighters, and it's expensive for BAF given their military budget.

2.) Heavy weight fighters are for deep strikes thousands of km away from base, such acquisition for a confrontation with Burma is unnecessary.

Anyway, best of luck. Su-27 is quite a potent platform.

1. Experience does not comes just like that, you have to have that platform or rent it. Prior to 2001 BAF did not have any prior experience on Mig-29S. But now they do. How would you have experience on something when you don't have any.. How much did India knew prior to the procurement of Su-30MKI?

2. BAF budget is increasing. The kind of budget they currently have is good enough to operate such a platform.

3. Who said BAF is buying Su-27 to confront burma only!! The purpose is not to strike India but if India intrude then what will BAF do if they dont have such fighters??

4. Also, BAF now has a vast sea surface to patrol and if needed the strike also. Now how will you strike when you dont have such platform?

5. If AC reveled in defence IQ is true then we probably are getting 24 to 32 Su-27SM2 or more.

In new platforms, you have a few options on the table with reasonable price:

MiG-35: The MRCA version. It is around $45-50 million a jet, but that's pretty good for what it offers. A Zhuk-AE AESA radar, powerful weapons, supermaneuverability and a good enough range for your needs.

Gripen: Anywhere between $45-60 million apiece depending on how much muscle you want to add to it. Comes with two options: Selex AESA or Elta ELM-5052 but since you can't have Israeli stuff, so stick to Selex. The model Gripen NG offered to Switzerland is intended to be much more capable than the current Gripen. Has a good enough combat radius, is from a neutral country and you guys have a decent image in the US (for the engines).


FC-1: The most easiest of all the options. It may lack in the juice that the new MiGs & Gripens have but it can be bought in much higher volumes and in your case with an option to go for western avionics and radar if you want.


These platforms are much more viable for you than the Su-27.

The Yak-130 is an excellent choice though. Congrats.

The MiG-35 is still under development. I doubt if the Russians have actually started to produce the Zhuk-AE AESA radar in large quantity right now.

It can be a future option for BAF I guess, and very likely so considering it already operates the MiG-29.

Gripen is simply a no go due to price and an American engine.

it there any conformation from Bangladesh?
if Bangladesh want to buy YAK130 trainer. we have L 15 which is very similar to Yak130.
I think china can also provide loan to bangladesh, if they want to buy L 15.
