I disagree on the thought that poverty will push people towards kuffar. if they are led, by an honest and just leader who shares the pains of poverty with his people and suffers/perseveres with them, they will still gather around him. Let's not forget the example of our Holy Prophet PBUH when Medina was being artificially driven to poverty during the battle of the trenches when they had the city state completely surrounded and cut off from all trading which caused massive poverty all across Medina. The Muslims did not go towards kuffar cuz they saw their leader The Holy Prophet PBUH himself with a rock tied around his stomach and enduring the poverty. We all know the result.
