DRDO has been carrying out Research and Development to develop a missile based on the LFRJ (Liquid Fuel Ramjet) Engine for STAR (Supersonic TARget), a target missile capable of hitting Mach 2.5 speed to help surface warship crews practice how to detect and defeat incoming supersonic anti-ship missiles. STAR can be launched from the ground and ships using a Catapult-launched system and has a range of 55-175km with RCS of 0.2-1.9m2 and a shelf life of 10 years.

DRDO also has plans to develop air-launched variants of STAR (Supersonic TARget) that can be used as Anti-AWACS and Anti-Radiation missiles for the entire Tejas Mk1A and Mk2 fleet. idrw.org has been told that the baseline STAR variant is already at prototype stages and likely will be tested later this year.

Baseline STAR uses a booster in the first stage and then moves to Liquid Fuel Ramjet (LFRJ) engine in the second stage to simulate sea-skimming cruise missiles by flying faster than twice the speed of sound and as low as 12 feet off the surface of the ocean. The target missile also can simulate high-altitude cruise missile attacks that plunge at ships from higher than 30,000 feet.

While little is known about the present status of the Air launched Anti-AWACS and Anti-Radiation missile variant of the STAR under development, it is claimed that it will be a low-cost option to engage slow-moving airborne force multipliers at a longer range than using the more expensive Astra Mk3 that are powered by Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) motor.

We ain’t as efficient as neutrals
Take my like .. just take it

So they made a bigger Akash?

Why make an AEW killer for the Tejas?

What has the poor MKI done(or not done) to be second fiddle to the Tejas?

Firstly Tejas is the smallest jet in the inventory if that can carry it so can other jets.

Secondly tactics, tejas will be on caps always in the future. CAP designated aircrafts launch a sudden assault on the awacs forcing it to evade and drop to lower altitudes turning the enemy blind for few minutes while the strike packages take to the air getting into formations. Those few minutes change the outcome of the war.

And its no where close to akarsh btw.

Very poor tactics then - your CAP aircraft isn’t to be used for OCA in general. If they are being used for it then they are part of the offensive force package because with the payload restrictions that will happen with two of these on a Tejas means it will best up for another 20 minutes at best.

I can prove it too by adding a simulated STAR on a Tejas trying to cover for an offensive package.
Chances are the “drive off the AEW” by two aircraft on CAP fails miserably but this time it will actually show up with “proof”

How about we try a similar tactic in a future wargame. I could prove it to work if I could simulate the strike timings accurately.

FYI what I just mentioned actually worked against the Soviets in Vietnam and Iraqis in the first gulf war. Different aircraft & different radar ground systems.

To be honest, I don't like what is happening to the Tejas. It smells like specification creep. It should have been an easy to produce, light, cheap, quickly adaptable by young pilots entering service, and able to do simple interception, point interception at that, without the weakness of the predecessor MiG21 that relied so heavily on ground control. Its AESA radar is great, a good step forward; if it has, in addition, a couple - not more - of good air-to-air missiles, for WVR and BVR use respectively, it should be left alone to do that and nothing more.

Combat Air Patrol is precisely what it should be doing. Giving it other tasks - like using the MiG21, a classic point interceptor, for ground attack - will completely obfuscate its main objective, to keep enemy aircraft far from the assets under guard.

Perhaps I don't understand very well, but shaping this Maruti 800 among fighters as an AWACS killer is a big mistake.

The tactics described are probably capable of improvement. The SU30 should be the candidate AWACS killer.

Sounds good.

Our chief of the Air Force (in the war game) used it as an escort, and it worked well, although the Tejas is a short-legged plane (like its predecessor. the MiG21).

Let's try it.

Old tactics of the 20th Century.

Takeout AWACS with ADS

Takeout ADS with Drones

Takeout Drones with MANPADs

I think you get the drift...
