the new gnome3 variant called "unity" in ubuntu is a let-down for many. btw gnome,kde etc are user interfaces(desktop environment for linux challenged).
I will recommend Linux Mint(Ubuntu like) 12. it carries Mint Gnome Shell Extensions which helps in making Gnome3 usable.

I started using ubuntu because the built in social networking agent . Bad luck it simply doesn't work. Bought a new laptop and got windows 7 with it, that's my queue out of Linux variants.

I would advice Windows only if you want to use Photoshop, MS Office or Visual Studio. Linux can do everything else fine

Well instead of using Photoshop he can go with GIMP, Open Office instead of Ms Office, and Eclips with Mono (Framework) instead of Visual Studio ...

1 GB RAM is just enough for XP. If he can get another 1 GB, XP will be the best one for him.

Nah, i had trouble installing flash and chrome apps with linux, it's not a good web experience
Also, dont worry about pirated, pirating the 100mb ones is like raping a skeleton

You've made the right choice, get Ubuntu. It's the easiest and the prettiest of the Linux variants (and the one with the most community support).

Only thing is that you might not be able to use a 3G dongle since most providers don't support Linux.

Ya I guess it was 2005-6

I used to have 512MB RAM then. Upgraded it over time. Heck, it was so difficult to find DDR1 RAM even two years ago.
