cats cannot be trained. They need to like you on heir own terms. dont bother about them getting closer. some cats by nature do not like to be petted.. just keep feeding them.
my neighbor has two cats.. one of them always wants to sit on the lap. the other never wants to be touched. thats why I got a dog.

feeding is not only thing that will work to get close to them if they are stray cat, try to play with them.
Buy cat toy like small white ball (white is their favorite). make a box bed for them. Try to get close slowly when they eat, that is time when you have chance to get close. Anyway do you have another pet type ?
