Not sure if the Indian Sunni muslims treat them similarly, in India but Sunnis have hold on the Muslim religious bodies, they bully other sects but never heard about the persecution, there are around 1 million Ahmadias living in India

Sunnis from Egypt to India to Pakistan to Indonesia believe the same about Ahmadis

And Sunnis hold on to Muslim bodies because they are a majority in indo Pak region and are 80% of all Muslim world
