- According to police officials, Lt Col T Jadhav was in a relationship with the junior officer
- Police are investigating the woman officer’s initial FIR
AGRA: A lieutenant colonel in the Army allegedly committed suicide by injecting himself with a toxic substance after attempting to strangle his junior, a lieutenant with who he was having an affair, according to the police.
Lt Col T Jadhav (40) who had been posted at the Mathura military hospital as anaesthetist for the past two years, had gone for a long drive on Friday along Baldeo road near the Yamunapar area with the lieutenant, a nursing assistant at the hospital, when the incident occurred.
According to police officials, Jadhav, who is from Maharashtra and is a married father of two, was in a relationship with the junior officer, who is from Dehradun, for some time. "He had been depressed ever since the lieutenant had informed him that she was calling the relationship off because her wedding had been fixed," said an official.
The FIR filed by the lieutenant on Friday night said that Jadhav asked her to go for a drive with him because he wanted to discuss something with her. "After reaching Sri Radha Radha colony, Lt Col Jadhav asked the junior officer to join him in a suicide pact. When she tried to reason with him, he attempted to strangle her," said Mathura city additional superintendent of police (ASP) Ashok Kumar Singh, talking to TOI.
"The woman officer said she resisted the attempt and managed to free herself after a hard struggle, and jumped out. Lt Col Jadhav then locked himself in the car and injected what appears to be a poisonous substance into his thigh," the ASP said.
After the lieutenant informed the Army authorities about the incident, Jadhav's body was brought to the military hospital by service personnel, following which an autopsy was conducted by Army authorities. The civil police was informed of the matter and the autopsy on Saturday afternoon. Police are now examining the details of the autopsy.
"The family members of the deceased officer, meanwhile, have submitted a written complaint as well, alleging a conspiracy and that Jadhav was murdered," ASP Singh said.
Police are investigating the woman officer's initial FIR and looking into the background of the case. Investigators will also examine the other angles of the matter and the exact sequence of events, since there were no witnesses present when Jadhav died, apart from the lieutenant herself, the police official added.
Army authorities were not available for comment till the time of filing this report.
