Qaddafi is dead, murdered in cold blood by the mobs sent lynch him. The NATO thugs will change the Islamic flag of Libya and will begin using King Idris flag inspired by the flag designed by Mark Sykes in the First Arab Revolt led by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). Then as now, the British had promised the Arabs freedom. What they got instead was the splitting up of the Arab nation in 22 separate states, and the implantation of the fruits of the Balfour Declaration in the heart of Palestine.
On October 3, 1911 Italy attacked Tripoli, claiming to be liberating the Ottoman Libyan Wilayats from Ottoman rule. Just like Napoleon had done in Cairo a few years earlier the Italians also proclaimed that they had come in not as conquerers but as liberator. The Ottoman sultan ceded Libya to the Italians by signing the 1912 Treaty of Lausanne. Tripoli was largely under Italian control by 1914, except for Cyrenaica and the Fezzan run by the Senussi.
On 25 October 1920, the Italian government recognized Sheikh Sidi Idris as the hereditary head of the nomadic Senussi, with wide authority in Kufra and other oases, as Emir of Cyrenaica, a new title extended by the British at the close of World War I. Italo Balbo, the 1934-1940 Governor of Italian Libya,had promoted the colonization of Libya by Italians.
Omar Mukhtar, a Senussi sheikh led the uprising against colonial powers. In March 1937 Mussolini made a state visit to Libya had himself declared Protector of Islam and was presented with a symbolic sword. Omar Mukhtar was made famous by a Hollywood film called The Lion and the Desert. The fight against the colonizers continued through to World War IIwith Idris as an allied with the British and French. It was Omar Mukhtar was he who finally led Libya to independence in 1951.
Libya had been an Italian colony since 1911 and embroiled in a protracted rebellion. The British installed the Emir of Cyrenaica and Tripoli, Sidi Muhammad Idris al-Mahdi al-Senussi when the country gained its independence in 1951.Idris was the incompetent buffoon was ruled Libya till 1969.
In 1953 King Idris sold Libya away to Britain under the twenty-year treaty of friendship and alliance granting them the naval and land bases in Cyrenaica and Tripolitania. IN 1953 Idris sold the to the US the use of the Wheelus Air Base just outside Tripoli. The US misses its only base in the Mediterranean. In 1956 Idris absolved Italy clear of all damages to Libya, but allowed the Italian community in Tripoli to maintain its assets practically intact. Colonel Qaddafi changed all that and shut down all the bases. He nationalized the Oil companies and they have been against him ever since. They could not eliminate him for 40 years, but finally they did. Pretty soon the bases will return.

The same humanitarian intervention that the pacifists and those who waved the flag of King Idris are demanding in an urgent appeal, forget history. They should remember that a century ago, in 1911, the occupation of Libya, prepared by incessant propaganda, was supported by majority public opinion, while in the cabarets they sang, Tripoli, sing land of love come sweetly where the syrup runs.
