Legendary General Vo Nguyen Giap dies, aged 102

I'm surprised that he was 102. He would of outlived many of his comrades.

Also, if there is a Pro-China faction within Vietnamese politics, would that mean many older generation people like Vo supports China?

Anyway, RIP Vo Nguyen.

Vo supports a stable and friendly relationship with China and that got him into numerous trouble. China and Vietnam had 10 years war after 1979, Vo's visit to China in 1990 Asia game helped to normalize the relationship - as our vietnamese comrades knew that USSR is gone and they could no longer afford another 10 years war with China.

Today Vo is gone, vietnamese regime in Hanoi need to fully understand that the last friendly link between two nations is now gone, we Chinese no longer has any "friend" in vietnam, what left is just a huge load monkeys couldn't understand the international order.

International order doesn't mean what do you think. Think about independence of Taiwan first. There was the country maned "Republic of Famosa" in the past.

Vietnam's 'Red Napoleon' Vo Nguyen Giap dies aged 102
Vo Nguyen Giap, mastermind of victory over the French in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu, dies aged 102.

legendary General Vo Nguyen Giap, whose guerrilla tactics defeated the French and American armies, has died aged 102.
Giap, the so-called 'red Napoleon', died at Hanoi's 108 military hospital, where he had been living for the last three years.
Second only to late revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh as modern Vietnam's most revered figure, Giap was the founding father of the Vietnam People's Army, whose guerrilla tactics inspired anti-colonial fighters worldwide.
"Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap has passed away - brilliant military strategist who once told me that we were an 'honorable enemy'," former US Republican presidential candidate John McCain, a former navy pilot who was shot down and famously held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, tweeted.

Giap, born on August 25, 1911 into a well-off peasant family, was a self-taught soldier whose only military lesson came from an old encyclopaedia entry describing the mechanism of hand grenades.
He went on to secure victory over the French in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu, the battle that ended Paris' rule in Indochina and precipitated nearly two decades of US involvement in Vietnam.
"General Vo Nguyen Giap is one of the most talented military strategists and most famous generals, not just in Vietnam, but in world military history," Vietnamese historian Phan Huy Le told AFP.
His greatest triumph will always be the Dien Bien Phu victory, based on an astounding logistical feat by his Viet Minh fighters, who surprised the French by hauling their artillery into surrounding jungle hills from where they pounded enemy positions below.
"It was the spark that lit the powder keg for the empire. Less than six months after Dien Bien Phu, the Algerian war (for independence) began with the All Saints Day attacks. Dien Bien Phu was effectively where it all started," said French historian Hugues Tertrais.
For two decades after Dien Bien Phu, Giap, a former history teacher who was fluent in French, continued to command his forces as they battled American troops and their surrogate regime in South Vietnam until final victory on April 30, 1975.
The fall of Saigon fuelled his near mythical status overseas as a master strategist and inspired liberation movements everywhere.
But Giap's success on the battlefield had earned him some powerful enemies at home - including party chief Le Duan - and after the war, in 1980, Giap lost his post as defence minister.
He was eased out of the Politburo in 1982 and left politics officially in 1991.
He continued to speak out until well into his 90s about sensitive issues such as corruption and bauxite mining, and his popularity, particularly among the young, remained undiminished.
He is survived by Dang Bich Ha, his wife since 1949, and four children.

Note that "bauxite mining" in Vietnam related to Chinese Company and corruption officials in VN Govt.

He was indeed pro-soviet initially but was quickly scolded by Ho chiminh for suggesting using soviet style military fight with the U.S. Ho was fundamental in teaching him what style of war was fit for vn then. That was also why he was against the adoption of pro-soviet policy by Lê Duẩn.

Its' funny, when China occupied with force HoangSa 1974 and Khmer Rouge attacked on our borders with help of Chinese advisers and weapons ?,

and also reported that he was pro-Soviets in 1960s. :P

If not for him, China would not normalize her relationship with vn.

He indeed contributes to vn throughout his life.
Vo was said he knew China well and voted against the military campaign against Cambodia in 1978.

he lived for nearly a century. not too bad. below an image with his family:

Both he and ho spent quite some time in China. Because of ho and him, China sent tons of materials, trained most of the elite cadets helping vn defeat France and then U.S.'s invasion..

Since ages Vietnamese leadership is divided into pro and anti-China faction. So no surprise today Vietnam is struggled to decide where to go: more ties with China or with Japan/America? an impossible task.

By the way, Vo studied some of the tricks in "The Art of War" from Sun Tzu :D

International order doesn't mean what do you think. Think about independence of Taiwan first. There was the country maned "Republic of Famosa" in the past.
Taiwan is completely dependent on China today for its economy, and being reunited is a matter of time. The so called "Republic of Formosa" was a product of Japanese aggression. We can also form a Republic of Hanoi in the future if you want it. I'd would start sweating bullets since Giap is now gone, the last link in the old generation of revolutionaries in Asia. Other than Ho Chi Minh and Giap, none of your politicians are liked by Chinese. Sure you can call to Uncle Sam or Japs for help, but remember we're always right next door.

This man should be applauded for his role in defeating those French imperialists and the Yankees.

RIP to an Asian hero!

His reputation was admitted by direct enemies !!!
Please rest in peace, my General

past? vietnam was a part of China in the past, we found its people were stupid and its land useless so we no longer want to have it.

.......
Now let's go back to the topic of vietnam:

you monkeys need to respect the international order, the order determined by countries like China, US, Russia, you are a tiny little nation following rules, we are UNSC permanent member making rules.

Please show a little respect in a thread devoted to the death of a great general.

For you "Republic of Famosa" rubbish, it is president is called President of the Republic of China:

He is also the chairman of the Chinese nationalist party:

Every single passport issued by the regime in Taipei says 'Republic of China':

vietnamese members:

historically, your nation is always a puppet state ruled by China, this is not going to change when we further develop our economy and tech. when we Chinese laughing at india for their stupidity and dirty cities, you need to be aware that we still see india as a competitor due its huge population. but what vietnam got? nothing! there is no competition between we two nations, you are our puppet state, that is all.

Vo Nguyen Giap is gone now, as already made clear to you guys - the last friendly link between we two nations is now gone.

Don't lie, kids.

Vietnam regained independence in the past, and recently with help of people around the world. Soviet Union and socialist countries were by side with us until end of Vietnam war.

Forgotten that China stopped help from 1968 to shake hands with USA 1972, and backed Khmer Rouge to attack us after 1975 ?

Giap general visited Moscow in 1977.

There's been plenty of reports about his death around here in the news. It's been rather complimentary, despite him being an enemy of the United States. Skill earns respect, even among those who oppose you.

I think the suggestion that Giap was only notable due to support from China to be fallacious, if not somewhat laughable. The Chinese exited the Vietnam War far in advance of its end. The Chinese were involved for the entirety of the Korean War, and they only managed a stalemate while battling a numerically inferior force. The North Vietnamese achieve complete control of the country in the face of a numerically superior force. Based on that, I'm inclined to believe that Giap's success is due more to his own skill and less to any Chinese involvement. After the war, Vietnam takes out Cambodia, then repels a Chinese force that's twice the size of the force employed by the Vietnamese. I'd much rather fight the Chinese than the Vietnamese. The Vietnamese know how to fight, and no amount of gloating can change that.

You comments is laughable at best.

China didn't withdraw its troops until the so called Vietnamization by the US - why China had to maintain its presence there when the US was leaving? Learn history before opening up your big mouth.

The Chinese were involved for the entirety of the Korean War, and they only managed a stalemate while battling a numerically inferior force.

As already demonstrated, you do lack very basic knowledge of history.

The so called 'stalemate' was the worst outcome for the US, it was first time in its history that US signed ceasefire agreement without winning the war. US didn't do the same when it had wars with your nation. Keep this in mind.

Battling a numerically inferior force? Are you talking about some random battles in 200 BC? How many tanks/aircrafts/warships China had at that time? Would you like to have an apple to apple comparison on this first?

The North Vietnamese achieve complete control of the country in the face of a numerically superior force. Based on that, I'm inclined to believe that Giap's success is due more to his own skill and less to any Chinese involvement.

Dude, after the war, China and Vietnam has a 10 years conflict, when our troops went into vietnma, they were all shocked - they saw vietnamese losers using Chinese weapons/supplies fighting with China. How they got all these? Did they pay any single cent?

For their generals, tell me how many of them didn't get trained by Chinese? You may want to check why Vo Nguyen Giap is pro-China and how long did he spent in China.

After the war, Vietnam takes out Cambodia, then repels a Chinese force that's twice the size of the force employed by the Vietnamese.

you are so cute.

They repelled the Chinese force? 35 years after the war, they still consider the casualties as a national secret, and you believe they gained up hand in that war? IQ can not be improved, but you can improve your logic.

I'd much rather fight the Chinese than the Vietnamese. The Vietnamese know how to fight, and no amount of gloating can change that.

This worth 0 cent to me - a undereduated moron who basically has 0 knowledge about history making a wrong assumption. tell me, why bother even to mention it?

我能用你的母語指出你的低級錯誤,而悲慘的你甚至不能理解我同爲聯合國工作語言的母語。你不認爲很悲慘嗎?或許改行繼續賣鴉片,才是出路?
