Legal tweak to allow PM to retain army officers with stroke of pen

Yes for major, top leadership appointments like the CJCS and COAS. But not for rank and file. This basically means that under the spirit of the law the PM can "retain"/"extend" any officers appointment. So like the third rate SHO appointments, Pak Army appointments will now potentially fall within the domain of the executive. This seldom is the case in militaries, where internal process of appointment is idependent in order to keep civilian involvement to a minimum. Now a GOC Quetta or Panu or Sector Cmder, or a Brig responsible for RYK Firing range (often leased for farming) all fall within the "favorites" approach, which basically means corruption. The Army as it is suffers from civilian involvement, now it is likely to get worse.

Also this degradation will not happen overnight. It will happen slowly.

Moving the center of gravity squarely into the office of the PM. In 20 years we'll see old men adorned like french curtains, and the task of converting Pak Army into the Egyptian model will be completed.
The fact that the retention clause is open to basically any position speaks to the complete politicization of the military. With this one stroke the Shareef brothers will do more harm to the institution that they and their supporters don't realize.

But on a serious note ....our military hopefully show extreme professionalism on selection ..and hopefully will be on merit ......because the name published from Avenfield will be the greatest embarrassment for the institution.

The Army Chief's appointment should be automatic; on the date of retirement of the incumbent Army Chief, the next senior most officer of the Army should automatically become the next Army Chief.

Why have this stupid and nonsense rule of appointing the Army Chief as per the wishes of the Prime Minister. Are the officers, who are overlooked for promotion to the highest Army office, are not competent enough?

And extension in service, for any damned reason, is cold hard murder of merit. Once the tenure is complete, there should be no provision for extension/retention/ad-hoc or contractual appointment/reappointment etc.

Yaar our babas fail to understand that the precedents they set for simple reasons (Asim Munir), tomorrow become rules for bigger and badder reasons. And we can follow this chain all the way back to Sikander Mirza.
You might be right on AM - since I think his 3 star tenure ends right before Bajwa's. But to your point if that was the case they had many other options. First let Voldermort leave a few days earlier. The desperation to cling to power till the last second, the rest be damned. These small men, have no sense of their legacies. None whatsoever - remember the "stock".
