I say this as a Chinese.
Robert Lee never mistreated anyone, not even slaves. He was a man with a good heart. He was a Virginian. Virginia was his home. It's true that the civil war was unfortunate with hundreds of thousands killed, but the civil war was not Lee's fault anymore than it was Grant's fault. Every man back then fought for his home state just like every man back in Washington's days used black slaves. Lee was not more evil than Washington.
Lee was not more a traitor than Washington. Washington declared war on Britain. Washington was a general in the British army. He didn't want to fight Britain. He had no choice. Lee declared war on USA. Lee was a general in the USA army. He didn't want to fight USA. He had no choice.
USA didn't punish Lee after the civil war. His statue was put there to honor him as a man of courage, dignity, dedication, moral values, and to remember his service to USA.
British people put up a statue of George Washington in London to remember his service to Britain.

Whites forgave Lee. I think it's time for blacks to do the same. The black mayor of Charlottesville should do some soul searching and be a beacon against social division in his city and for tolerance in his city.
Two wrongs don't make a right. Hate begets hate. Love begets love.
The Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange said this. We cannot eradicate the evil in each and every one of us, but we can try to rise above it.
