Lebanon Supreme Defense Council orders army to resist Israel aggression

BEIRUT: Lebanon's Supreme Defense Council gave a mandate to the military on Wednesday to confront Israeli aggression on the country’s borders.
At a meeting chaired by President Michel Aoun and held in Beirut’s presidential palace, the council warned Israel that its plans to build a wall along the shared border would constitute a violation of Lebanese sovereignty and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
In August of 2006, the UNSC unanimously adopted the resolution, which called for a cessation of all hostilities in southern Lebanon following a devastating conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah group.
"The council will continue to act on the regional and international levels with a view to preventing Israel from building its planned separation barrier," the council said in a statement.
The Defense Council is mandated with setting -- and implementing -- Lebanon’s national defense policy.
Headed up by the president, the council includes the prime minister and two deputies, along with the ministers of defense, foreign affairs, finance, economy and the interior.

UNIFIL head chairs first tripartite meeting with LAF and IDF officials in 2018

UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Michael Beary today chaired the first tripartite meeting of 2018 with senior officials from the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at the UN position at Ras Al Naqoura.

Discussions centred around the liaison and coordination arrangements provided by UNIFIL to ensure that there is no misunderstanding or miscalculation along the Blue Line in order to ensure a continued climate of calm and stability.

There has been great attention on this tripartite meeting due to engineering works south of the Blue Line previously announced by the Israeli side. UNIFIL’s position on the construction works proposed by the IDF is that any activity close to the Blue Line should be predictable, with sufficient prior notification to allow for coordination by the parties, so as to avoid misunderstandings and prevent incidents. Today’s discussions were useful and allowed both parties to assert their positions. It was agreed to continue to use the Tripartite forum to address the issue.

UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Beary welcomed the confidence expressed by both parties in its liaison, coordination arrangements and the Tripartite forum to help facilitate the calm and stability that has been achieved in southern Lebanon.

“UNIFIL stands ready 24/7 for any follow-up meetings,” the Head of Mission/Force Commander told both parties, while encouraging them to “examine the benefits that can be achieved by reaching agreement through close coordination.”

Both sides also confirmed their commitment to further use UNIFIL’s tripartite and liaison mechanisms to address any issues that could provide potential for tensions and to minimize the scope for any possible misunderstandings among the parties.They also reaffirmed their support in the implementation of UNIFIL’s mandate under UN Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) and the operational paragraphs of Security Council resolution 2373 (2017).

“We have again experienced a period of relative calm in the Area of Operation (AO) since our last meeting,” said Major General Beary. “However, there has been a great deal of activity along the Blue Line. I would like to acknowledge the restraint exercised by both parties in decreasing tension and maintaining stability. No one wants to return to a period of escalating tensions and a breach of the cessation of hostilities.”

UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Beary also emphasized the strategic importance of UNIFIL’s troops deployed on the ground – especially its Liaison Branch - who are playing a paramount role along the Blue Line to defuse tensions. ***

Unfortunately for Lebanon, Hezbollah is stronger than the Lebanese army.

I do not know a single successful country where another entity than the national army is stronger. This is something that you see in African banana republics with all due respect to such countries.

Unfortunately for the people of Lebanon, the Lebanese army has no capability to defend the borders of Lebanon.

Borders that they do not even control fully themselves to begin with.

There is also a conflict between Lebanon and Usrael about Gas fields and EEZ (look for Block 9) in the Eastern Mediterranean sea..

Unfortunately Lebanon has little power to enforce their rights in case of a possible conflict or dispute.

Either incorporate Hezbollah into the national army (gradual process) and make it submit under the orders of the Lebanese army or disarm it and enlist the fighters in the national army.

But Lebanon has Hezbollah to defend it in case of conflict.. we like it or not..if there is another war with Lebanon it is not the symbolic Lebanese army who will fight, it is the people through its support to Hezbollah.. because even if Lebanon had a powerful small army it will not match that of Usrael.. So asymmetric warfare is the only answer.. For Lebanon population, Hezbollah is the LDF.. outside of Lebanon its actions are dubious though..
