Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces have begun ethnically cleansing Sunni Muslims and deliberately pushing refugees across the border into Lebanon, the Lebanese caretaker minister for social affairs said on Tuesday.

Assad is battling a Sunni-led revolt in Syria, which he and his father before him have ruled for four decades. He belongs to the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Wael Abu Faour told Reuters that during the 27-month-old conflict Syrian forces had committed what was “tantamount to ethnic cleansing next to the Syrian-Lebanese border.”

“[Assad] is trying to displace all the Sunnis to Lebanon and this is why I expect to have more displaced people,” he said.

The revolt turned into a civil war after a crackdown on anti-Assad protesters. It has taken on a sectarian hue, with Shiite Iran and Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah militants backing Assad, while Sunni powers support the rebels. The conflict has sharpened sectarian rifts in Lebanon.

The United Nations says 93,000 people have been killed in Syria and 1.6 million Syrians have fled abroad. Lebanon, the smallest of Syria’s neighbors with 4 million people, has taken in more than half a million Syrian refugees.

“What began was a wave of people fleeing from violence to Lebanon, but what is happening now is a completely different matter. What is happening now is organized displacement of the Syrian people – organized based on sectarian and political motives,” said Abu Faour.

He made his comments after meeting U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, who said that refugees in Lebanon and their local hosts directly needed support from world powers.

“My very strong appeal is for massive support not only to refugees, not only to local communities but to Lebanon itself in order to be able to respond to this challenge,” Guterres said, adding that the Lebanese education, health, and social affairs ministries need financial aid.

The United Nations has asked for some $5 billion in humanitarian aid for Syrians and for Syria’s neighbors beforethe end of the year, its biggest emergency appeal to date.

Diplomats say that foreign donors are unwilling to give money to Lebanon’s sectarian-based government which they see as deeply divided over Syria’s war and dysfunctional on domestic issues. Some ministers, such as Abu Faour, have been fiercely critical of Assad, while others strongly support him.

“Lebanon needs to formulate a mechanism to create confidence and trust in the government so that donors can increase their funding,” said the Swedish ambassador to Beirut, Niklas Kebbon.
Canadian ambassador Hilary Childs-Adams said her country was seeking reassurances that there is “a mechanism to send aid to Lebanon.” She said it was easier to send aid to Jordan, which hosts 470,000 Syrian refugees. On Sunday, Canada pledged 100 million Canadian dollars to help Jordan cope with the burden.

Lebanese Sunni Muslim politician warns of state collapse

Lebanon’s main Sunni Muslim political party pleaded with the presidency on Tuesday to prevent “state collapse,” blaming the Shiite Hezbollah group for dragging the country into the war in neighboring Syria.

Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah militants are openly fighting for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as he battles a 27-month-old Sunni-led revolt. Inter-communal violence has spread to religiously-mixed Lebanese cities and border towns.

“Hezbollah is serving Syria and Iran at the expense of the Lebanese,” ex-Prime Minister Fouad Siniora told reporters. He said President Michel Suleiman should launch an initiative “to stop the state’s collapse and give the Lebanese hope.”

Siniora, head of the Future Movement that is part of the “March 14” coalition opposed to Syrian influence in Lebanon, said March 14 had sent a memorandum to Suleiman calling for the deployment of the army on the northern border with Syria, and suggesting a role for United Nations peacekeepers there.

“We need a full and immediate withdrawal (of Hezbollah) from the fighting in Syria,” he said.
He said Hezbollah’s huge arsenal of weapons supplied by Syria and Iran had made the Islamist group, which says its priority is fighting Israel, “stronger than the state.”

The United Nations says 93,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict, which has displaced millions of people, including more than 500,000 to Lebanon, a country of only 4million. Fighting between Lebanese groups supporting and opposing Assad has cost dozens of lives in Lebanon.

Hezbollah helped Assad’s forces retake the Syrian border town of Qusayr from rebels this month. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Lebanese political and military movement, vowed on Friday to maintain the fight in Syria.

Lebanon is a sectarian mess with all parties playing their cards, the former colony of Syria hardly qualifies for an opinion this matter!

May be Lebanese are speaking from their harsh experience with Islamism.

May be Syrians and specially Assad the butcher should have learned the lessen from Lebanon.

However these days so many refuse to learn a lesson from their neighbors positive or negative.

Everyone paying the British created mess. They left, but they achieved all goals successfully by dividing the people. When British royals created the middle eastern countries on handkerchief that would happened.

Wasn't the future movement on record boasting of sending arms and fighters into syria which was enough for the syrian government to issue arrest warrants for these criminals like hariri? But hezbollah joins in and now the likes of hariri are getting butt hurt and saying hezbollah are dragging lebanon into syria civil war is purely laughable.

Perfect timing,

Sparking out another sec warning shows how nervous Lebanon is. Maybe Hezbollah is next? Who knows.

Hezbollah was involved prior to Hariri's and Saqer's anti-Assad activities.

They most certainly are. In other word, Hezbollah is posing a threat to Lebanon.

Nikammay loag (crippled folks) always blame the sky, the sun, the moon, the stars, the fish, the elephant for their misery.

yeah. Blame everything on Baba Adam and Ammah Hawwah (Adam and Eve). Had they not touched the forbidden stuff, we all would be rolling around naked and in the Jannat (heaven).

Your post indicates that mentally you all are still living in false and made up world from 60+ years ago.

And utterly refuse to grow up and move on.

Sadly.

The easiest way to avoid blaming is to shoulder the blame on someone else's shoulder.

Syria Arab Army nor Assad didnot ask for this
why they dont talk about the Christians who Support the Assad and SAA
hahaha this are the same people who came to power today because the Hezbollah and Syria and Iran help to fight Israel

Syria is a good example of what can happen to Pakistan if it decide to establish its own neutral relation with Iran.
We should be extremely wary of GCC funded terrorist sleeper cells residing in our country.

This is the kind of mentality religion breeds..stupidity and blame gaming. If you read logically you may find that the story of Adam and Eve is utterly stupid fairy tale.

@somebozo

Lebanon is totally different from Pakistan. The later doesn't have a militia running a micro state within the state itself. Also, I don't think that KSA would harm Pakistan in any sense Sir.

Idk about what Iran has in mind.
Cheers.

KSA and Iran both have same goal in Pakistan - that is influence at any cost and like Syria, it will be Pakistani people who will bear the cost of such influence.

Talibans are very much running a micro state inside Pakistan already.

Yes . so true.

Lebanon is very much divided country. The government is influenced by KSA / good relations with KSA
and Hezbollah is the side of Iran.
You see the Alliances : it says a lot .
Let's check who are in the different alliances : it is quite surprising ? NO. Government of Lebanon is accused to be highly corrupted and not care about Lebanon.
Hezbollah is doing its own policy... what happens in Syria shows they don't care so much about Lebanon too.

One simple fact showing the government as well doesn't care:
it does nothing to improve and get stronger the national army. A christian living in Paris explaining me well why.
Because army, even if not pro Hezbollah, doesn't like the clan of Hariri and co... so these Hariri mafia are just not caring about army ... that 's why in some places attacked by some militants or foreign elements days ago ... army had to organize itself.
when they could.

A big miss of political will in Lebanon. It's scary for their future.

And that's why since army is by will weakened by government , Hezbollah army will exist for long.
