China was a democracy before PRC, ROC was one of the first republics in Asia established in 1912. It was a disaster and that's why it was overthrown by the communists in 1949.

Hong kong was never a democracy before 1997, they never got an election before, the governor was directly pointed by the British queen, all the freedom and so called democracy was given to them by the Chinese government and Chinese government keeps a hands off policy toward Hong kong since it returned to China.

British kings lost most of their power pretty much after the civil war, Britain almost became a republic, their whole system was for the most part managed by their parliaments which was democratically elected. But this is besides the point.

The point here is that you have to convince the worldwide people what your selling point is. If I see some random videos on youtube in which a Chinese citizen is asked what problems they have with their government and their response is "sorry I can't answer that", then without a doubt people will resist Chinese expansion because at the end of the day at the core of everything, what you are really selling is dictatorship.

Don't take this as an offence, I respect your opinion. If I were born in China I probably would have shared the same views as you, however I grew up drinking a different cup of tea from the people of China, I hear drinking tea one is not used to is not good for one's health, and I am sure the same is true for you as well.
