LCA Tejas Design and Analysis

Highly adapted wing design with carefully blended wing-body and area ruled fuselage form the basis for unbeatable performance of LCA. Built-in aerodynamic instability imporves ability and maneuverability. Wind tunnel tests on scale models and Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD)analyses have successfully been used to design and freeze the complex aerodynamic configuration of the LCA, and further to generate comprehensive aerodynamic data for Control Law design, flight simulation, performance prediction and structural design.

Creating a Numerical Master Geometry (NMG) of the complete aircraft and CAD modeling of every component of the LCA, served the needs of computational analyses including CFD and Finite Element Analysis of the Airframe and other structural components. DigitalPrototype Assembly (DPA) and Virtual Prototype of LCA built using CAD models of the components and Line Replaceable Units (LRUs)have enabled studies on assembly, sequencing, maintainability, lofting and looming.

An Enterprise-wide Product Data Management (EPDM) environment has been created for the LCA Programme to streamline and manage the entire product definition life cycle, to create, manage, share and re-use engineering and product definition date, documents and relation among them from initial stages of design and analysis to final production.

Wind Tunnel testing

Extensive tunnel tests have been carried out to generate aerodynamic data on frozen configuration of LCA on different scale models in various tunnels, in the entire flight envelope, both in India and abroad. The range of low speed and high speed wind tunnel tests include:

Force and moment tests
Air-intake tests
Component load tests - Wing and Fin loads, Control surface, hinge moments, Air brake loads, Store carriage loads etc.
Dynamic derivative tests(forced and free oscillations)
Ground effect studies
Pressure measurements
Spin tests
Store carriage & separation studies
Flow field measurements at Air Data Sensor location
All the wind tunnel models for the whole range of tests have been designed and fabricated within India (NAL/HAL/ADA/CMTI). Also, several special test rigs balances, high speed data acquisition systems, mass flow control units, dynamic distortion rakes etc. were developed for these tests within the country.

Testing and Qualification

A number of specialized test rigs have been built for various sub-systems and systems of LCA. The Dynamic Avionics Integration Rig (DAIR). Environmental Control System (ECS) Rig. Lightning Test Facility (LTF), Electrical System Test Rig, Fuel System Rig. Under Carriage Drop Test Rig and Brake Dynamometer are a few of them.

Specific aircraft components and assemblies are subjected to qualification test prior to installation? Integration. These include half wing test for evaluation of lightning protection and Main Airframe Static Test (MAST) specimen subjected to various maneuver loads. The MAST specimen will also be used for fatigue testing.

Stringent standards and procedures are followed at every phase of design and development. Independent agencies 'Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) and the Director General of Aircraft Quality Assurance (DGAQA)' critically review and clear all design procedures and components to be flight worthy.

Flight Testing

All flight test related activities of LCA are planned, coordinated and carried out by the National Flight Test Centre(NFTC), set up with the participation of Indian Air Force, ADA and HAL.

NFTC has a state-of-the-art telemetry ground facility with twelve real time monitoring stations. The on-board Flight Test Instrumentation (FTI) consists of Data Acquisition System(DAS). Real Time Telemetry System for selected parameters and Data Recording Unit (DRU).

Pre and Post flight briefs for every prototype flight is a meeting point for the entire design and flight test team involved in flight-testing. A fiber optic cable link ensures timely availability of the entire flight data in engineering units for off-line analysis by the design teams within a few hours of the flight, for clearing the aircraft for the next flight.

These are taken from ADA site and are not mine... Hope this is useful for those who are really In it, and also for those who criticize its development

LCA Design Dassault france.

The Indian government has been seeking technical assistance from American and European manufacturers for the LCA programme, and a fierce competition has raged among Lockheed, Grumman and Northrop as well as British Aerospace, MBB, Dornier, and Dassault-Breguet. Finally, Dassault-Breguet was chosen for the LCA programme and won a$100 million technical cooperation contract with India's Aeronautical Development Authority.
Dassault-Breguet will assist the Indians in the design and systems integration ' of the aircraft. Thirty top-flight engineers from Dassault-Breguet are due in India shortly to act as technical advisers to IADA in charge of the LCA programme.

The rest

he to-be-indigenously-developed engine for the LCA -- Kaveri -- was forgotten and the US made General Electric F-404 engine was substituted. Radar was sourced from Erricson Ferranti, carbon-fibre composite panels for wings from Alenia and fly-by-wire controls from Lockheed Martin. Design help was sought from British Aerospace, Avion Marcel Dassault and Deutsche Aerospace. Wind tunnel testing was done in the US, Russia and France
