LCA Set To Fly With Israeli Radar

India’s Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) is set to fly today for the first time with the Israeli Elta Multi-Mode Radar (MMR) onboard.

An Indian defense ministry official confirmed to Aviation Week that “weather permitting, we are aiming for the flight on April 22.”

Preparations are in full swing at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd’s (HAL) military airport for the critical flight, with last-minute mandatory safety checks underway. Airport sources confirmed that all flying activities would be stopped during the Tejas flight.

“We are all set to fly the limited series production [LSP-3] aircraft ... with MMR for the first time,” an official said. “All preflight checks are over, including high-speed taxi trials and engine ground runs.”

India opted for the proven Israeli Elta radar in May 2007 to enter the full-throttle weaponization stage of the program, and the radars arrived for integration in 2009. India looked toward Israel after homegrown joint efforts by HAL and India’s Defense Research and Development Organization to develop MMRs were delayed.

The Tejas LSP-3 flight comes in the wake of recent criticism by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defense over delays in the program. The panel expressed its desire that engine delays be sorted out and the fighter made operational as soon as possible.

India’s Aeronautical Development Agency and HAL have so far clocked 1,341 flights, and the Indian Air Force is hoping to induct the first squadron by 2014-15.

Nice but only ELTA wont suffice , we should speed up homegrown MMR to fit on next LOT.
Any ways weaponization should start for BVR and A2S standoff weapons now .
Thanks Anantha Krishnan for news - 2nd one in 15 days after LCH

LCA Set To Fly With Israeli Radar u made my day buddy yaaaaaaaaaaaaahoooooooooooooooooooooooooo atlassssssssssssst i waited to hear this for 2 years

Whatever be the criticism on LCA, they are valid. But I will still take the LCA in 2014-15 that can win 3 times to 5 against the MRCA winner.

Start with minimum fuss and lie low but expand your expertise to maximum effect.

.
good step forward. keep it up.
btw, when we buy this radar, do we also get the source codes for it?

.
India should scrap the MMRCA IMO..

Any Tejas with EJ200 TVC engine from EADS and Israeli Radar and weapons @ $30m is all IAF needs to compliment the HUGE FLANKER FLEET.

Its really a good news that Tejas will be flying with Elta radar.

MRCA Role will be quiet different from LCA role. LCA will be from second line of strike fighters. Front line fighters will be Su-30Mki and MRCA atleast for one more decade till India start getting Pak-Fa.
Main reason for MRCA is to get to know the latest technology thru ToT and apply that on Indian future aircraft which will be maufactured here.

werent u guys supposed to have an indeginous radar ? foreign engine .. foreign radar ?

Still in development.

The prototypes will fly using the Elta 2032. As the MMR Hybrid built using some of the Elta 2032 technology is still in the final stages of development.

At Aero India 2009, it was revealed that the 3D MMR project has been superseded by the new 3D AESA FCR project led by LRDE. The MMR itself has been completed with Elta Israel's assistance and now involved Elta 2032 technology for Air to Ground mapping and targeting. This "hybrid" MMR will be supplied for the initial MK1 LCAs of which 2 Squadrons worth are to be ordered by the Indian Air Force (around 40 units). The MK2 LCA will receive the new AESA radar.

since the MMR borrows from the Elta 2032 , it will used to test the integration of systems.

The Elta radar mention could even be the Hybrid radar. and not the 2032

As of now, the final Production variant at the end of the year is still slatted to the MMR hybrid.

This can change but i don't see why it has to.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

either way ,

this is let you know that both the radar and engine programs are still alive and going.

^ Thats fine mate, we got people like that on both sides

But coming back to LCA, even if the MMR wasnt ready in time i think you guys did a remarkable job with FBW controls atleast. Mastering AFCS will prove to be an asset, especially for AMCA

.
one big question why we went for unkil sam engine when we got russia which had costed us 20 years

You need to see the intent of the question and not assume every thing is a flame... :disagree:
