Latest Ranking of Developed, Developing, and Underdeveloped Nations (HDI Index)

.
List of Least developed Nations . There are a total of 48 least developed nations in the world according to United nations classification :

http://unctad.org/en/Pages/ALDC/Least Developed Countries/UN-list-of-Least-Developed-Countries.aspx

Bangladesh is still ranked as LDC because of lower GDP per capita and high poverty

LDC's are ranked on 3 criteria :
  • Poverty – adjustable criterion based on GNI per capita averaged over three years. As of 2015 a country must have GNI per capita less than US $1,035 to be included on the list, and over $1,242 to graduate from it.
  • Human resource weakness (based on indicators of nutrition, health, education and adult literacy) and
  • Economic vulnerability (based on instability of agricultural production, instability of exports of goods and services, economic importance of non-traditional activities, merchandise export concentration, handicap of economic smallness, and the percentage of population displaced by natural disasters)

I am aware of the oil. The tiny population. La la. However check out Iranian literacy rates and poverty rates. They are far better than Gabon. Poverty rates in Gabon are over 32% and are below 9% in Iran. You may well ask me why I am prepared to cite one set of figures but dismiss others. The reason is common sense. Iran has been a competant state for century plus. It has had oil for over half a century. Gabon got oil yesterday and and was a banana state the day before by comparison.

Look at figures from 2009, BD was put lower than Pakistan on HDI.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index_(2009)

BD - HDI 0.543
Pakistan - HDI - 0.572

Was there a conspiracy against BD in 2009?

Components of HDI are the following:

  • A long and healthy life: Life expectancy at birth.
  • Education index: Mean years of schooling and Expected years of schooling.
  • A decent standard of living: GNI per capita (PPP US$)
Now to compare Iran and Gabon on each of these components:

1. Life expectancy - Iran 74 versus Gabon 53 > Iran wins easily
2. Education - Iran 7.8 versus Gabon at 7.4 years > Iran wins just about
3. GNI - Iran 12,000 versus Gabon at 22,000 > Gabon wins

As for Gabon getting oil only yesterday, it had a GDP PPP/capita of 14,000 US dollars way back in 2000!

I am not saying that HDI is a perfect measure of people's well-being but it seems to be easiest way to capture a snapshot of the average person's life in a specific country.

In 2015 BD was at just over 1,300 US dollars GNI per capita and so cannot be classified in that list.

There are numerous rankings to see quality of life like LDC list , HDI and United nations happiness report . PK was ranked 92 on United nations happiness report ( ranks quality of life) and BD was ranked in 120s . Same with Least developed list where Bangladesh is mentioned and PK is not due to higher GDP per capita and low Poverty compared to BD BD has not yet satisfied United nations on poverty that is why it remains on the Least developed list .

HDI measures life expectancy and education where BD fares better . Happiness report measures things like housing and social support where again BD is way lower than PK . least developed list includes stuff like GDP per capita and poverty where again BD is lower .

Then there is mercers quality of life lists where Karachi , Lahore , Islamabad all rank higher than Dhaka . So there are numerous Quality of life rankings .

All I can see is a certain Pakistani being so butthurt by India's higher rank than Pakistan's that he started questioning the parameters of HDI. Way to go guys.

This new IHDI (Inequality Adjusted Human Development Index) is not considered a precise index when you want to see how developed a nation is. There reasons are many. Some of them are as follow;

1- Developed country is where all the developments situated... Means when you have 10000 research centers in a country, or 20 top universities or X Dollars of GDP as income in country X (let's say Iran), then Iran has all these developements within its borders... so, just because a poor farmer up in the Zagros mountains in Iran does not have access to a top research center in Tehran, it does not mean the country (IRAN) has not that development or achievement.

2- The inequality is not a precise index itself. Due to many reasons no nation likes to report how devided their people are. At least this is the case in Iran. Gini Index is always said to be improved... But is it really?

3- The way income, health, and education is distributed in small countries is way different from big nations due to obvious reasons. For example, a Single Advanced Hospital or a Single Research center or a single mine or oil field or factory can make all the difference in a tiny nation of less than 1 million people. There is no such thing as inequality in tiny nations, as almost all the population can be covered by one single development achievement. So, countries with tech, scientific, economical hubs or mega-cities tend to have less inequality while it still is a development situated inside that country borders.

4- There is a reason why IHDI is not considered as the main Development index in official papers and leaflets. Whenever officials need to introduce a nation and show how developed that nation is they use HDI... Simply because it is more reliable and accurate compared to less reliable IHDI..

In a nutshell, HDI index shows how developed a nation as a whole is and IHDI index is showing if all the development achievements are equally accessed by all citizens.

So, just like all other economists (including myself and my friends) go find your country and others in below list:

You are correct in some of your assertions regarding. BD has just achieved lower medium status in 2015. She will remain within LDC grouping for a further 2 years before she is reclassified. Standard methodology a country remains in its standard classification for three years to ensure that any improvement is established and not a statistical blip .
