New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is scouting the global arms market for stand-off missiles for its modern fighter jets to shore up their capability to shoot down enemy aircraft beyond visual range, an officer said Monday.

The IAF has issued a request for information (RFI) to global manufacturers of stand-off missiles fitted with light warheads that are capable of hitting enemy planes without engaging them in close dogfights, the officer said here.

"Such missiles become very potent when linked with airborne early warning and control systems (AWACS) that provide inputs on enemy missiles and aircraft beyond visual range. We do possess AWACS and we can make best use of these missiles," the officer added.

The IAF, in its specifications for the missiles, has sought a high-accuracy, precision strike weapon to avoid collateral damage. With a guidance system for both its midcourse and terminal stages after being launched, the missile will be a day-and-night weapon with all-weather operational capability.

Stand-off missiles, which are fired from beyond visual range, allow the fighter jets to remain out of the offensive range of the enemy aircraft.

A ground-based training simulator along with multi-media training packages, dummy training missiles, captive training missile pods and storage-cum-maintenance infrastructure also form part of the system the IAF is searching for.

The IAF's MiG-29 and Sukhoi SU-30 combat jets already operate Russian-origin R-27 medium-to-long-range missiles and the R-77 medium range missiles. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is also developing an air-to-air missile, Astra, with a 100-km range.

The IAF is looking to procure long-range air-to-air missiles at a time when it is increasing the number of Sukhoi aircraft in its fleet, apart from upgrading the MiG-29sLatest on IAF

Ya, k-100 is the best with ramjet engines...

The first wave of attack must be volley of k-100s from MKIs targeting enemy AWACs

I think MBDA meteor is going to win this one.

Yes.. This RFI is just to avoid another dose from CAG... In AI-09 only one MBDA person had said this to me that they could help India integrate METEOR on MKI..Later same came out in public..This thing is going on since then ...
MKI with METEOR will be no match ...
and what about KS-172 or K-100 ????

I think we already have them in sizable numbers..

I dont know whether they have RAMJET engines...
India is the prime investor for this project and hence even Russia will have to take our permission to buy this..:azn:

Another ELRAAM which we can get is R-37 ( with range ~400 Km same as Ks-172 )..Although primarily designed for Mig-31 , i think we can persuade russia to sell us if need be..

K-100,u mean Novator missiles the famed AWACS killers,it is hardly is news after 2007 Moscow air show, though many consider it is already in service with IAF,nobody openly claiming it because of MTCR.

The K-00 come with 2 different range one is 300km and IInd one 400km and about MTCR it did not apply on A2A mode

The Novator K-100 is a good choice but doesn't it have problem with accuracy at extended ranges against highly agile fighters? How about the Raytheon AIM-120D AMRAAM (130 miles range =209 km range) or even Meteor.Senior members help me.

I don't understand this, if ASTRA has the same range (100 kms). I'm not one of those- only by INDIAN- but am all for buy the best with the money you have (and nowadays India has A LOT of money) but it just seems like a duplication of resources. Maybe delays in ASTRA are the reason (I.e stop-gap measure)?

According to wiki AIM-120D has 72 km range and Meteor is the best and has much longer range. See the video in my above post. Many European countries jointly developed it for future threats and will be backbone of LR-AAM missiles. New generation ramjet powered long range AAM.

Astra has a range of 80 km and the new missile will surely have 120 km+ range, note the 'long range' while Astra is a medium range AAM. IAF is eying for Meteor or R-77M.

^^^^^Kinetic-Bro,AIM-120D is for the Raptor so Wiki's been edited as there is no way that the F-22 carries a missile with lesser range compared to the one's on the Super Horner/Viper.

May be possible. Less range does not mean its bad. Different missile different ranges. But there are new missiles under development for USAF, for example a ramjet version like Meteor and Future Medium range AAM (FMRAAM).
