The incident of killing of five Indian soldiers on the Line of Control (LOC) between Indian and Pakistani Kashmir is getting murkier with each passing day. Though Pakistan has denied the incident, the Indian opposition and corporate media has pressurized the government into pointing direct finger at Pakistan Armys elite Special Services Group (SSG).
In spite of the mounting pressure on Indian government to get tough with Pakistan, the Indian Army is getting to grips with an unanswered question; why Indian patrol, which was allegedly ambushed by SSG commandos right inside Indian-held territory, lost its five soldiers when they were supposed to have taken prescribed pre-cautions for meeting such an eventuality. For example, the Indian soldiers deployed in the area have clear instructions to wear bullet proof jackets while on patrol. This is Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by the 93rd Brigade HQ for security of the troops.
Hindustan Times has revealed that the five soldiers killed on August 6 --- four from 21 Bihar and one from 14 Maratha Light Infantry (MLI)--- were shot at close range and three of them had bullet injuries in the chest. This only shows that there was some serious violation of the SOP.
This raises three questions of very serious nature. First, the soldiers were not on patrol and were resting in their resting area where they were targeted. Obviously, they are not supposed to wear bullet-proof jacket while at rest. Second, they violated the SOP and went about patrolling without bullet-proof jackets which is again incredible because no soldier in his sound mind would patrol without proper gear. The third question is equally serious; the bullet-proof vests were not actually bullet proof and those in Indian Army responsible for procurement made big buck at the cost of lives of soldiers.
It has been reported that a high-level investigation of the incident is under way.
