Lata Mangeshkar a 'so-called' singer, says New York Times

It will be stupid to call her so-called singer just because readers dont know her.. its like saying Sirisena so called president of Lanka because not many know the guy in US. NYT is of course trying to explain the term 'playback singer'...

well in that case, i understand ur situation. you can relate to the report more than i do.
its like, LTTE (well i know lata mangeshkar n ltte are poles apart, but this example is just for understanding). sri lankans and indians would know about ltte, but some media based in LA might not know about their actions here and term them "just another fringe element". does this anyway reduce the pain the sri lankans had to go through ? similarly, lata's greatness doesnt diminish due to an article in "some newspaper".
however, such brouhaha about an article is stretching things too far.

Well i'm not arguing about her greatness to Indians, Cos i'm not that aware of her but NYT is a American media outlet catering to Americans, And they would not know zilch about either this lady or what a playback singer is.. Both alien subjects to them, Of cause unless you're American of East Indian origin

It'll be the same here in Australia, Unless she is a Cricketer nobody really would know about her..

Ok.. Actually if you can comprehend the whats written in the article, They're featuring an Indian comedian, That impersonates Tendulkar and this lady.. So it's not actually about her either.. Sadly

But yeah not such bad publicity for Mr. Tanmay Bhat..

Should one even care what NY Times think of the subcontinent singers?

Growing up in Punjab, one of the earliest songs that I can remember were ‘Mundia Sialkotia’ by madame Noor Jehan and ‘Naaley Lambi tey a naaley kaali, raat judaiyan wali’ by Lataji & Lata was not even a Punjabi!

Music is food for the soul. People from both sides of the border still remember Kundan Lal Sehgal. Lataji was, is & will remain one of the most popular singers of the subcontinent for quite a few generations. . Who cares what anyone else think or writes?

Nope not really.. Read the thread saw the unnecessary controversy so i just googled and found out who she really is.. I presume she's a lady hence i called her that.. Oh and now i know who Mr.Tanmay Bhat is as well, Since he seems to be more famous in the US than Mrs. Manjeskar

If it makes you feel any better i knew who Tendulkar is and quite well at that..
