Dubai plans world’s largest-ever hotel

DUBAI: Dubai is planning to build the world’s largest hotel as part of a $27 billion resort project unveiled on Monday to spearhead the Gulf emirate’s drive to become a global tourism hub.

Promotional video of the Bawadi Project showed a 10-kilometre long resort strip that resembled Las Vegas without the casinos – its 31 hotels modelled on ancient Egyptian palaces, Hollywood, London’s Houses of Parliament and even the moon.

Dubai’s fantastic, even bizarre developments, including a ski slope in the desert and man-made islands shaped like palm fronds, helped draw some six million tourists last year to a tiny desert land that is fast running out of oil.

Dubai hopes to make that 15 million tourists a year over the next decade even as its richer neighbours plough record oil revenues into new mega-projects to try to emulate Dubai’s success in weaning its economy off energy exports.

“The launch of this project effectively signals the next major phase in tourism development in Dubai as we look forward to the next eight years of major growth,” said Saeed al-Muntafiq, chief executive of Tatweer, the Dubai government-owned project developer.

Muntafiq said at the launch ceremony that Dubai, one of seven members of the oil-exporting United Arab Emirates, would need to build 70,000-80,000 new hotel rooms over the next decade to meet its expansion plans.

Bawadi will have more than 29,000 hotel rooms, nearly double the number now available in Dubai, and will be able to host more than 3 million tourists by 2016.

The centrepiece of the resort will be the 6,500-room Asia Asia Hotel which Tatweer says will be the largest in the world. The MGM Grand Las Vegas, now the largest hotel in the world, has 5,044 rooms.

The first phase of the project, which includes the Asia Asia Hotel, will be operational by 2010.

Tatweer will invest $10.9 billion in the project, building the Asia Asia and Bawadi’s infrastructure, Muntafiq said. The rest of the money will come from investors.

“We have been talking to several leading names in the (leisure) industry and they have all expressed strong interest,” Muntafiq told reporters, declining to name any potential investors.

He said that Tatweer had no plans to issue either debt or equity to raise its share of the investment.

Dubai is pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into infrastructure and real estate developments and is already home to an estimated 17 percent of the world’s cranes. Other governments in the world’s biggest oil exporting region are following suit and more than $1 trillion worth of infrastructure projects are in the pipeline across the region. reuters

Arabs have loads of money. Pakistan should follow Dubai and become a economic industrialized trade hub. This can only be done if the illiterate balochis stop attacking Gawadar or its constructions. Gawadar if successful will only be in interest of the people of Pakistan supported by China.

its threading a very dangerious path.

Its new found vigour is very much copiable by their bigger neigbours.
The money thats floating in Dubai comes from SA and Kuwait. And all thast bcoz of the free society coupled with a construction boom.

Most of the construction work is for upper class segments, and those are all bought easily by the saudi the kuwaitis and iranians. But are not occupied, they but it as acapital asset ,keep it ith them for sometime and then resell it to some body else who buys it for the same purpose.

The advantage dubai was having was due to the freehold nature of these properties.but now other emirates like abudhabi which is the richest has also started building freehold property.and also saudi is planning the same.

Sou r going to see property investors going elsewhere also to buy freehold property and then u will see a huge slump in property sales in Dubai.

And such a slump will effect the sales of the new ongoing projects and since both the 2 constructin giants emaar and nakheel owned by dubai ruler he will be in serious financial trouble.

And also for those who think crude at 70$is going to help dubai wither out such a slump,Dubai is not rich in crude but gets it share of revenue from Abudhabi.

Dubai is the switzerland of the East. But even Switzerland cant compete with this. Dubai is becoming the prefered destanation for Europeans. Dubai is attracting World Class mega bucks to its shores. Donald Trump is going to be bulding casinos, gold courses and hotels in Dubai. The worlds tallest building will be in Dubai. Dubai also has the worlds only 8 star hotel.....with its own fleet of Private jets and 40 Rolls Royce limos. The bathrooms are equiped with 24 carat gold BVLGARI fittings..Dubai is the biggest Airport in the middle east....Its airline is one of the worlds most modern and biggest. The Palm....the World.....the underwater hotel......all sold out within a matter of days! Dubai is also the first destination for most USNAVY ships..., and Dubai is one of the biggest ports in the world.Of course Dubai...(UAE) is also one of the best equiped nation in the middle east with 80 F-16E/Fs, 40Mirage2000-9,Apaches,S-400,Lelerc Tanks,German ACs, and is developing the worlds most advanced trainer jet with Germany.

So...to the "individuals" who havent been to Dubai, or dont have a clue about it, yet post the most absurd statements on here regarding Dubai....do some research first.. :stupid:

my comments are after taking into consideration all these.

The point is that, the growth pattern that Dubai has undertaken is very much copiable and can be undertaken better by countries like qatar and bahrain.

So Dubai will be a tourist hot spot...they cant provide anything other than what las vegas or any western country can provide.

Why would tourist go to Dubai or Middle eastern hotels???

the climate is agints ,the nature is dead.

the hotels are doing brisk business because of the number of conferences and investors coming ftom saudi and kuwaitis.

Thats not quite true, parts of the Arab world have lots of money for eg Saudi, Kuwait, UAE and the other gulf states.

Even these rich ones are on average poorer than the developed Western world. We consider them rich because we compare them with the rest of the muslim world which is poorer.

You almost sound like a communist....the people dont need hot running water, what they really need is more fighter planes.....

Dubai is making what the world wants, that is high quality hotels and a world class port and airport. It is postioning it self (literally and figuratvly) as the centre of the world lying between the prosperous Europe and the Dynamic Asia.

Building factories or farms when they will not be profitable is precisly the thing that shouldnt be done.

Success is copiable, the fact that is copied doesnt make anyone poorer.

I do understand your point that Dubai is being copied and so will face more competition in the future but your statement is too drastic that it will go bankrupt.

When free trade in textiles was recently allowed, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India have not been destroyed by Chinese competition as was feared. If anything all these countries exports of textiles have increased.

Good statement, it shows that the they are either Magicians or geniuses. Even Beckam has bought some desert as you call it.

I guess a country like Dubai should make everyone question why they cant transform their countries which are lush and green when UAE which is a heap of sand can.
