Large bomb goes off in Bangkok

27 killed in bomb blasts outside Brahma temple in Thailand
17 Aug 2015, 2007 hrs IST , AGENCIES
Two powerful bomb blasts outside a hugely popular Lord Brahma temple in a crowded business district here today killed at least 27 people, including four foreigners.

The twin blasts, which the government believed was aimed at damaging economy and tourism, occurred in a space of minutes around 7 pm (5:30 IST) outside Erawan Shrine dedicated to Lord Brahma in the downtown Chidlom district, creating panic as people fled the place that was spilled with blood.

The temple is located on a main road through Bangkok's commercial hub and is surrounded by three major shopping malls. However, there were no reports of any Indian casualties in the explosions that caused a huge amount of chaos, with body parts scattered everywhere. It is among Bangkok's most popular tourist attractions.

Police said first an improvised explosive device fastened to a utility pole in front of the temple at the Ratchaprasong intersection detonated which was immediately followed by a motorbike bomb blast, causing two nearby taxis to explode.

However, some sources said a bomb was hidden under a roadside bench in front of the Phra Prom (Brahma temple). No group has claimed responsibility for the blast.

The Rajprasong intersection has been the centre of political demonstrations in recent years.

Thai TV said at least 27 people were killed during the evening rush hour. The nationality of four foreigners killed in the blast is not known yet.

The iron fence surrounding the shrine was bent outward by the force of the blast.

Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwong said: "It was a TNT bomb... the people who did it targeted foreigners and to damage tourism and the economy."

Police said the bomb was made of 5 kg of TNT explosive. The explosion had a radius of 40 metres.

The Bangkok Post quoted police as saying that at least one more bomb was defused by officers in the same area.

"We are in close touch with the authorities concerned. So far there have been no reports of any Indians being injured," Indian Ambassador to Thailand Harsh Vardhan Shringla told PTI. Police, emergency vans and bomb detonation squads rushed to the area where several motorcycles lay mangled.

Bomb attacks in Bangkok are extremely rare.

In 2012, a series of explosions hit Bangkok, injuring five people. Thai authorities said that the bombings were a botched attempt by Iranian nationals to assassinate Israeli diplomats. Several Iranians were arrested and charged for the attacks, one of whom was badly injured.

This looks very much like a Gladio B operation.

It reminds me of the Oktoberfest terror attack where the Whasington used neo-Nazis to commit the crime in odert to blame the communists. But the neo-Nazi was identified as the bomb probably went off too early and he got killed as well.

1.Blaming "Islamic Terrorists" for such acts has become a fashion. The S Thai Muslims have been struggling for autonomy for many decades. Therefore, it would be easy to blame them. But consider the fols:

a. S Thai Muslims have never taken their agitation/struggle outside S Thailand.
b. " Islamic Terrorists" normally use suicide bombers. Not done in this case.
c. Terrorist groups would normally use multiple bombs for effect. Here the Police searched but failed to find anymore device.
d. A woman had entered the temple about 15 mins before the blast carrying a handbag. She is now the top suspect. Muslim "terrorists" do not use women for such ventures.
e. There was a procession led by the Crown Prince in the day to celebrate the queen's birthday. For the S Thai that procession would have been an easier and more productive target.
f. If the S Thai were to target a temple, it would be a Buddhist one, not Hindu. In other words, the perpetrator was Buddhist by faith.
2. Now consider who is the top beneficiary through this misdeed? The Thai Junta obviously. This act now perpetuates their rule. I would like to question the Thai Military Intel on this. And this suspicion will be proven correct when we see the Junta pouncing on political leaders in the coming days.

They did try but they were caught
b. " Islamic Terrorists" normally use suicide bombers. Not done in this case.
Only sometimes

That's a possibility at this point, but jihadis do use women for bombings, plenty of times

No, hitting the tourist industry is more productive, plus there was a big police deployment during the procession
f. If the S Thai were to target a temple, it would be a Buddhist one, not Hindu. In other words, the perpetrator was Buddhist by faith.
No, they could hit any temple, your reasoning makes no sense

Possible, but unlikely, they need the economy to do well, this works against their interest.

I think your analysis has too many errors.

a. Almost Correct. But there was an event in the past, a blast on Ram Khamhang University which linked to S. Muslim.
b. S. Muslim independence terrorists often use Moterbike bombs. They never use suicide bomb. Your statistic is wrong with respect to Thailand case.
c. There are multiple bombs in this event. Many has not yet blasted out, and was securely removed by police.
d. Some said the suspect was a man.
e. Correct.
f. Not necessary. Thai Bhuddists also prey on this Hindu Shine as well. Your conclusion that perpetrator was Bhuddist by faith has no support from your if clause.
2. This is also another possiblility yes.

I'm surprised if they want to destroy Thai tourism they should target the red light district.

.
Hindu shrine frequented by Buddists, chinese and western travelers. Not difficult to guess the perpetrators...

Hint: Hindu, Burma, Uyghur, West

I hope all terrorists burn in hell when they die. No cause justifies putting an indiscriminate weapon of widespread destruction, like a bomb is, into a heavily populated area of civilians. Just very evil and despicable!

RIP to the dead and condolences to their family.
