TRANSPORTERS have expressed reservations about the import of Chinese CNG buses due to their past experiences with the vehicles and lack of infrastructure for their maintenance.

Talking to The News on Monday, the office-bearers of the Urban Transport Union said they were concerned about the induction of the Chinese buses because of technical and financial reasons.

Citing the past experience with the Chinese buses, UTU President Arshad Khan Niazi said a local transport company imported 52 buses from China, which did not last even three years. Discussing the causes of the demise of the Chinese buses, he said that they could not run on the rugged road conditions and needed maintenance frequently. Secondly, spare parts for the bus were short in supply and they were too costly.

The UTU president said importing buses from India was a better option as they were more suited to our communication infrastructure and were cost-effective as well. He argued that a CNG bus from India cost around Rs1.5 million whereas the one from china cost around Rs 4 million. He suggested that after the recent elections in India, the relation would hopefully improve and the government should try to negotiate a deal with Indian manufacturers instead of rushing into a buying spree with the Chinese companies.

Mr Niazi pointed out the lack of infrastructure to cater to the repair and maintenance services of the Chinese vehicles would prove a major contributor to their failure as the CNG engines would be a new concept for mechanics. He said it was highly unwise to import buses from China in bulk as was being done by transporters on the government’s proposal because the vehicles should be evaluated for their performance and maintenance facilities.

He suggested around a dozen of the vehicles should be imported to test their performance first. The government’s plan to import around 800 buses would be catastrophic if they did not prove beneficial for the transport system, he added

He said that the inherent high price of the Chinese Busses puts the transporters on the back foot as they are already facing tough times as the banks have stopped lending money to them after the recession due to oil price hike.

The transport owners appreciated the government for taking a positive step by providing 25 per cent subsidy on the imported buses but added that the subsidy was insufficient to encourage transporters to buy the buses. They demanded the government create soft loaning options and special packages for transporters in this regard if they were serious in implementing this environment-friendly transport system.

Meanwhile, Regional Transport Authority Secretary Chaudhry Iqbal completely rejected the idea of the bulk import of the Chinese buses bringing any problems as he said the company had assured of maintenance services and supply of spare parts.

He said the prices of Chinese buses were nominally higher than the Indian buses but the Indian buses could not be imported because of the government policy against it. He said the government had given a subsidy on the Chinese busses and that was what it could do right now.

Whats the status of Bus production in Pak ? Are they made in Pak , if so who are the prominent manufacturers ?

Here in Dubai abt 90% buses on the street are Tata or Ashok Leyland.

It will remain a political decision. All true friendship and true enmity have a price.

I remember reading somewhere about the first Bus service between India and Pakistan back in 99.
Junoon was holding a concert in India with Vajpayee attending. The plan was for the band to be driven on stage in the bus and then Jump out to croon "Yaaron yehi dosti hai". Apparently halfway up the stage one of the planks gave in & the bus got stuck.. Some really smart character had the brains to comment "That was the Kashmir plank"...:D

I am suprised they want to scrap the deal with Channa Dengfung Co. as they have been manufacturing Cheng Qi and Adam Motorcar kits in Pakistan since early 05.

It is a shame Pakistan's cannot stay local to anything... This Arshad Niazi, i bet he is the owner of Niazi Express and must be sour at not getting the metro licence for the city that was awarded to New-Khan and Daewoo city buses... :D

What a spoil Sport... Yes the grapes are sour "Mr. Arshad".

Who are the major CNG bus manufacturers in India? Also is the market only for CNG ready buses or retrofitting old cars and buses with CNG tech? If I'm not mistaken both of these businesses have gained quite a bit of popularity in India over the past decade or so.

CNG has taken off in a very big way in India, though restricted mostly to metros & surrounding reasons.

It is mandatory for all public transport to run on CNG in metros, this includes taxis, auto rickshaws , busses & small load carriers. The only hitch is the No of filling stations , the time it takes to refill & the fact that with a 12-16 kg tank a car runs about 200 km or less thus increasing time between refills.

The effect on the environment is amazing - no more smoke belching buses & bronchial probs .

The industry to retrofit cars & all other forms of tpt is thriving with local & imported kits. A kit for a car costs approx Rs 35 - 40,000.00 depending on the tank size. For an average office goer this cost gets recovered in about 3-5 months running as the running cost of a car on CNG is approx Rs 1 / km.
the option of switching to petrol / diesel remains so its OK.

The No of filling stations is increasing however space is a constraint. Now filling stations are mushrooming in the satellite towns around metros too as public transport from there brings commuters into the metros. The police is strict in enforcing laws so it helps.

There a No of Maj players in the bus ( both in large & medium sectors) field - TATA, Ashok leyland, Mahindra, Eicher and so on.

For cars and smaller vehicles, it is more common to convert into LPG (liquefied petroleum gas - cooking gas). It is simpler to convert a petrol engine to LPG and LPG is also easily available.
Most metros have a LPG filling station and vehicles are available from factory for LPG (no gas cylinder required -gas comes straight out of a pump). In rural areas, it is more common to buy a kit and modify vehicles -and dump the LPG cylinder in the boot.

There are quite a few in Pakistan who are manufacturing trucks and buses localy and the major player among them is HINOPAK. There quality is not bad at all infact most of the old and new buses on the road in Pakistan are being manufatured by them in Pakistan. We need self reliance not commission agents for buying low quality stuff from somewhere else.

lets make them clear to these Lahore Transporters that we will not seat on a indian bus if they came to pakistan.

Ashok Leyland Buses Sounds great!Most of them are used in Midland and Hilly Routes too.while TATA is commonly used in cities and coastline. :D

This is no loss really. You guys need to witness China and experience the top made stuff, the stuff that Best Buy and Circuit City imports are at the very BOTTOM of Chinese brands. Same thing with autos, ships, etc.

It's unfortunately western media uses this propaganda to down-play Chinese quality --- they KNOW better. It is all deliberate. Well you gotta come and see for yourself. There's a reason why they are scared.... :china: They did the same thing with Japanese brands, and later Korean brands. Quality will eventually wipe out any false propaganda.

The most environmentally and efficient buses are being designed and built in China. Beijing started this program years ago. How many buses do you think USA has??? Everyone drives their cars. There's more public buses in China that all of Europe combined! China has economy of scale and a ready market.

You just need to travel to see with your own eyes. :smitten:
