It might look like a good move at the surface level. But dig deep a bit and introspect. Isnt it govts responsibility to ensure lower price for every one to afford. They also sell amma water, why bcos water has become expensive due to lack of supply from govt. If the govts infra was so good in every nook & corner of state then we dont need to buy water or food at premium prices.

It's competition with Punjab to attract Bihari labour. There is a big shortage in the neighboring state so Haryana wants to add a little bit more incentive for them to go there.,

Surplus crop production and very low inflation rate is the main reason- This will be followed across India where State Govt- buys wheat, rice, pulses etc- Even potato, onion and tomato are being sold at dirt cheap wholesale rates-

If the trends continue as It is for Milk production we may have Milk products at Mid day meal for under-privileged kids too-

The gov. just ensured Food security. Not the prefect solution, but we live in an imperfect world.

So far such scheme now exist in 3 states (that I know of). Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and now Haryana.

To ensure that people belonging to economically weaker sections get at least one square meal a day, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh is thinking of introducing a ‘thaali’ priced at just Rs 5. “The thaali will consist of rice, chapattis, daal, a vegetable dish and papad. All this will be made available at a price of Rs 5,” UP minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary told PTI.

Chaudhary holds the charge of the dairy development, religious affairs, culture, minority welfare, Muslim Waqf and Haj departments in the Adityanath government.

The minister said that during a recent official tour to Chhattisgarh he happened to taste a Rs 5 meal, which was being provided by the government of that state. “I tasted a Rs 5 thaali while on tour. I was moving from one institution to another. We made a stoppage that was spontaneous and not pre-planned. It was there we had the Rs 5 meal,” Chaudhary said. He said the food was clean, hygienic and tasted really good. “I was satisfied with the food and overall cleanliness of the place,” Chaudhary said.

Last month, the Madhya Pradesh government had also kick-started its ‘Deendayal Rasoi Yojana’, to provide subsidised meals to the poor at Rs 5 per plate at some select outlets. The ambitious scheme of the MP government was launched on April 7, simultaneously in Bhopal and Gwalior.

In Tamil Nadu, Amma Unavagam (Amma Canteen) is a food subsidisation programme run by the state government that is quite popular among the people. Under the scheme, municipal corporations of the state run canteens that serve food at low prices.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi inuagurates first such canteen in the State, aimed at serving the poor, in Jayanagar.

'Indira Canteen', aimed at serving the poor at subsidised rates, was inaugurated in Bengaluru on Wednesday by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Mr. Gandhi, who had the first breakfast at the canteen in Jayanagar, said 'Indira Canteens' would serve the migrants who came to Bengaluru with a dream to build something. “No person in Bengaluru should ever go hungry and the canteens are a great means towards it,” he said, asking the government to give much attention to cleanliness and taste.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that Indira Canteens was a continuation of the Congress's commitment to a hunger-free Karnataka.

“We started Anna Bhagya scheme by giving 7 kg of rice free to over 4 crore people the very day we came to power. To its credit, the scheme is stemming mass migration from our villages despite severe drought in the last three years. Not a single hunger related death has been reported in the State despite severe drought. Indira Canteens is only a continuation of that programme,” he said.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said the programme would be extended to all district centres across the State. Only those who knew hunger would know its pain and opposition by the rich and those who do not understand hunger was irrelevant. “Those who oppose the programme are anti-poor and anti-downtrodden.”

Responding to criticism on naming the canteens after Indira Gandhi, he said the canteens were aptly named after the leader who gave a rousing call to the nation in 1971 to eradicate poverty: “garibi hathao.” That was her response to her opponents calling for “Indira hathao.” ''Our response to our opponents is also similar.''

The Chief Minister came down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Demonetisation had failed to help the poor. “From the past three years it's only his Mann ki Baat that's going on. Our’s is vaangi baath for the poor,” he said.

Healthy and nutritious: Food being cooked at the high-tech kitchen launched by Akshaya Patra Foundation at Narsingi in Ranga Reddy district on Thursday.

Launching Akshaya Patra’s 33rd and its largest high-tech kitchen at Narsingi in Ranga Reddy district amid a galaxy of political leaders here on Thursday, the NGO’s chairman, Madhu Pandit Dasa, said the ultimate goal was to help poor school students conquer hunger and thus access quality education at schools.

At an impressive function, Union Minister of State for Labour, Bandaru Dattatreya, appreciated the speed with which the ultra-modern kitchen, equipped to serve an estimated 35,000 meals to schoolchildren, was completed. Work on the kitchen was done in a record span of just nine months with the financial help of over ₹10.5 crore received from Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

The Centre and the Telangana State government too were doing their best and Mr. Dattatreya said 35,000 meals would be delivered to 238 schools across Ranga Reddy district and 366 Anganwadi centres primarily between Ranga Reddy and Medak districts. Mr. Dasa said Akshaya Patra now served meals to 95,585 children in 880 schools and 27,000 Anganwadi beneficiaries in Telangana. In 18 more months, 16 kitchens would be added across different States, including four in Telangana at Mahabubnagar, Kandi, Warangal and Vikarabad. The goal was to feed five million children by 2020, up from the current 1.6 million, he explained.

Executive officer and regional executive-India for Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ryiochi Shinke, said the organisation was happy to collaborate with local communities across several countries with its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Mr. Shinke fondly recalled the day when he participated in the bhoomi pooja of the Narsingi kitchen and also enjoyed the lunch that followed, which was the same that made its way to schools. He conveyed his appreciation to the Goseva mandal that donated the land for the kitchen. Several public representatives including Transport Minister P. Mahender Reddy, MP K. Vishweshwar Reddy and Rajendra Nagar MLA T. Prakash Goud expressed happiness over the kitchen coming up in the said Assembly constituency.
