L&T Delivers India's Largest Indigenously Developed Pressurized Heavy-Water Reactor (700 MWe PHWR)

China gained a lot through partnering with Westinghouse and Areva in the development of CAP1000, CAP1400 & CNP-1000 which is not the case with India until the NSG wavier was pursued - South Korea's APR-1400 is pretty impressive though.

Indian firms like Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Walchandnagar Industries and Godrej and Boyce have a potentially active role in the nuclear sector. Now that the Nuclear liability issue has been sorted out I am sure they'll absorb and gain the required expertise as subcontractors to come up with their own design - Recent deals struck by L&T with reference to Westinghouse's AP1000 and Areva's ERP nuclear reactors are going to be crucial.

On the sidelines we have made significant progress on Advance Heavy Water Reactors - a next-generation nuclear reactor that burns thorium in its fuel core. Construction of a 300MW prototype will be commence in 2016. AHWR has been one of the few reactors in the world that have already strived to meet the requirements of innovative next-generation nuclear reactors as has been spelt out in several international forums.

NPCIL plans to expand the Tarapur Atomic Power Station with two such new reactors (AHWR's), which will have a capacity of about 1,400 MW.


The more advanced reactors not based on how much power they producing, but how much efficient they are in producing per MW.

BTW, check FBR and AHWR, they are atleast a generation ahead of current so called Chinese and SK reactors. And dont forget India directly jumped the gun for fusion reactors, by participating in ITER.

It's combined capacity of 1400 MWe - that is 700 MWe each.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) plans to expand the Tarapur Atomic Power Station with two new reactors, which will have a capacity of about 1,400 MW. Indigenously developed Advance Heavy Water Reactors could be installed at the site.

Of course it will - but we are closer than ever - India's first commercial fast breeder reactor — the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) — is approaching completion at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu - will be commissioned by September - the only operational commercial PFBR in the world.

Meanwhile, work on two more fast breeder reactors is likely to gain momentum from next year - the reactors would be more advanced than the prototype fast breeder reactor and would be generating 600 MW power and would have advanced features like in fourth generation nuclear reactors - they will be more advanced and have additional safety features.

We will meet as much as 30% of its electrical demands through thorium by 2050.

Actually as per my knowledge Thorium will be the main source of electricity for India because being abundant in India.
AWHR will be developed till 2025 i think when it will be completed it will make a trend for thorium reactors and then India can export them. So the export should not be an issue here. L&T will be capable of absorbing the technology once the USA companies starts their operations in india.

i don't think so. In early 2015 i heard that it will start it's operations sometimes around 2025.
Also chinese are also working alongside Canada on the same.

The 500-MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, near here, is getting ready to be commissioned in September. When the reactor goes critical, it will signal India’s triumphant entry into the second stage of its three-stage nuclear power programme.

The PFBR will use plutonium-uranium oxide as fuel and 1,750 tonnes of liquid sodium as coolant. It is called a breeder reactor because it breeds more fuel than it consumes. “We are committed to making the PFBR attain criticality in September,” said P. Chellapandi, chairman and managing director, Bharatiya Nabikhiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI), a public sector undertaking of the Department of Atomic Energy, tasked with building breeder reactors.

The PFBR construction had been completed and equipment energised. “We are awaiting clearance from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) for sodium charging, fuel loading, reactor criticality and then stepping up power generation,” Dr. Chellapandi said.

The AERB had sent several safety committees to the PFBR for inspection of design compliance and component specifications.

Dr. Chellapandi said: “We have kept the sodium frozen in 10 big tanks.

“All heat transport systems, comprising the pipelines, the heat exchanger components and tanks, have been filled with pure argon to avoid any chemical reaction with sodium and oxygen. We have to melt the sodium and pump it into the reactor circuits.”

After the sodium charging, engineers will perform thermal hydraulics experiments to check the functioning of the pumps and the heat exchanger.

Later, the AERB will give clearance for loading the fuel. In the first stage of the nuclear power programme, a fleet of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors, running on natural uranium, had been built. In the second stage, a series of breeder reactors will come up. Reactors running on thorium will form the third stage.
