Wilful misreading: LK Advani talks of Rahul's grandma, and Opposition sees reference to Modi - Firstpost

Clarifying his controversial remarks on Emergency, Advani said, "I did not mean any individual when I made that statement. I am opposed to all kinds of dictatorships."

"Arrogance breeds authoritarianism. It is very sad. Today's leaders should be modest like Vajpayee," Advani told a TV channel

"I have always been against this one man shows in political parties."

"Vajpayee was a tall leader with successful record but I never heard someone at that time saying Vajpayee is India and India is Vajpayee."

In another interview Advani also said, "anyone who comes to power doesn't want to lose it" and warned that the voter will teach a lesson to anyone who "abuses power".

Emergency cannot be imposed in India for a second time easily but added a word of caution that "those who have power or those who are likely to be in power, their susceptibility would always be greater".

"Anyone who comes to power doesn't want to lose it, just as anyone who gets money does not want to lose it," he said.

"at present, the forces that can crush democracy are stronger" was made against the backdrop of the present context, the BJP patriarch sought to dismiss any speculation.

"I do not know whether I used stronger. I simply said strong....What surprises me and what distresses me is that those who have imposed such a drastic Emergency in the country do not have any sense of guilt for that. It is this that distresses me," he said.

IB unaware of the Emergency decision, claims a former spy - The Hindu
Updated: September 20, 2015 02:56 IST

Throughout the Emergency, Mr. Rajeswar writes, the IB briefed Indira Gandhi about how the country was responding to her decision.
On June 25, 1975, when Indira Gandhi suspended all the Constitutional norms and imposed the Emergency across the country, the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India’s premier internal spy agency, was taken by surprise.

In his memoir titled, India The Crucial Years, T.V. Rajeswar, former IB chief, who’s also served as Governor of various States in the 1980s, mentions that Ms. Gandhi's decision “was not made in consultation with the IB or the Home Ministry.”

Launched by Vice-President Hamid Ansari here at his residence, the book portrays the turbulent times of the 1970s India, shining light on the popular political leaders of the time and doubting the rationale of their decision making. In his address to a small audience which mostly comprised retired intelligence officers, Mr. Rajeswar said that the decision about which political leader or activist should be arrested was made either by Ms. Gandhi herself or by her son, Sanjay Gandhi.

IB State-wise survey

Throughout the Emergency, Mr. Rajeswar writes, the IB briefed Ms. Gandhi about how the country was responding to her decision. “One year after the imposition of Emergency, the IB conducted a State-wise survey of the state of affairs and recommended the release of all political prisoners. It was suggested to Ms. Gandhi that it would be advisable to hold elections some time in October 1976. The elections were held in 1977, and Ms. Gandhi's defeat from her pocket borough of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh was announced on the night of March 23.”

Mr. Rajeswar blames Ms. Gandhi's son Sanjay Gandhi for having an overbearing influence over her mother and for brushing aside IB's suggestion of holding elections in October 1976.

At another instance, Mr. Rajeswar claims that though various Hindu nationalist organisations have been pro-Israel right from the Independence, the reason why India was late in establishing friendly ties with Israel was because of Kashmir dispute and the fear of dissent from Indian Muslims that forced the Congress to display a “pro-Arab” stance.

Mr. Ansari praised the book saying that it was the template for intelligence officers that will inspire them to remain objective while performing their tasks.

“If the agents aren’t neutral,” Mr. Ansari said, “objective reporting is not possible.”

RSS had supported several of Emergency measures: Ex-IB chief
New Delhi, Sep 21, 2015 (PTI)
Former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief T V Rajeswar has claimed that the RSS had supported several measures taken during the Emergency and the then chief of the organisation Balasaheb Deoras had tried to contact then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

"Not only they (RSS) were supportive of this, they wanted to establish contact apart from Mrs Gandhi, with Sanjay Gandhi also," Rajeswar said in an interview with Karan Thapar for programme 'To the Point', according to a statement issued by the interviewer.

Rajeswar, who served as Governor of Uttar Pradesh and Sikkim after his retirement from service, was responding when asked about certain passages in his book which talk about RSS supporting the Emergency.

He said it was "correct" and then emphasised that he was "absolutely sure of it", the statement said.

He replied in affirmative when told that though Deoras was keen to meet Gandhi, she did not do so as she did not want to be seen close the organisation.

When asked about his claim that Deoras had also wanted to meet Sanjay Gandhi, Rajeswar said "apparently he wanted to express support to the measures taken", the statement said.

He was also asked about claims in his book that RSS had also extended support to the Indira Gandhi-led Congress in the elections. He said attempts to contact Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay were "obviously meant for this".

In the interview, Rajeswar also suggested that the idea of Emergency was suggested by Sidharth Shankar Ray.

Rajeswar said Gandhi was aware of what was happening during the Emergency but how serious the impact was on the people and the consequences, she may not have realised.

Rajeswar also said that Sanjay Gandhi wielded enormous powers during the Emergency. Speaking further about Sanjay's role, he said "apparently" Mrs Gandhi did not realise the serious constitutional implications.

Indira Gandhi - the missing chapter in MO Mathai's book | Zee News
New Delhi: Former Intelligence Bureau chief TV Rajeswar has revealed that he had received a chapter of MO Mathai's book 'Reminiscences of the Nehru Age' and had – without reading the contents - handed it over to Indira Gandhi in 1981.

The disclosure is part of Rajeswar's recently published book "India The Crucial Years".

Mathai, Jawaharlal Nehru's private secretary, book – published in 1978 – had created a mini stoirm over its contents, especially after it was revealed that on chapter (29) did not make it to the book.

A note by the publisher, Narendra Kumar, on Page 153 had said: "This chapter on an intensely personal experience of the author's, written without inhibition in the DH Lawrence style, has been withdrawn by the author at the last moment." Narendra Kumar later said the sentence was a "teaser" and there was no such chapter.

However, the existence of such a chapter has always been an issue of intense speculation.
