Labour To Announce Mechanism For Expulsion Of 100,000 Expats Yearly
No More Transfer Of Family Visit Visas
KUWAIT CITY, April 13: Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Thikra Al-Rashidi said the ministry will soon announce the mechanism for the expulsion of 100,000 expatriates every year, reports Al-Jarida daily.
In a recent press statement, Al-Rashidi confirmed the ministry is determined and serious in its bid to expel a million expatriates within 10 years to fix the loopholes in the local labor market. She said this is one of the priorities of the ministry as part of its program to support national manpower in the private sector.
It can be recalled that the members of the Parliament expressed contradicting views on the ministrys plan with some of them supporting it while others consider the move a violation of human rights.
Al-Rashidi also issued a decision banning the transfer of commercial visit visas to work permits in the private sector, justifying the move as a way to organize the foreign workforce and to fix the lopsided population structure.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior has suspended the processing of applications to transfer family visit visas to dependent visas (Article 22) or work permits (Article 18).
Reliable sources from the ministry said the Immigration Department no longer accepts applications for the transfer of family visit visas to dependent or work visas for all nationalities. Sources clarified the family visit visa is valid only for three months and it is not extended unless for medical reasons as proven by official documents from the Ministry of Health.
Sources added the ministry also suspended the transfer of commercial visit visas to work permits for all nationalities, including those who hold academic certificates a decision that took effect on April 1.
In another development, Assistant Undersecretary for Labor Affairs at Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Jamal Al-Dousari announced that they will soon test the new shelter constructed for expatriate domestic workers in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
Al-Dousari explained that the testing of the center will be carried out prior to transferring the domestic workers as per the laid down regulations, revealing that the concerned officials have moved about 42 individuals from the temporary shelter in Khaitan as a preliminary step of transferring all the workers to the new shelter.
He indicated that it will not be possible to transfer all the workers there without ensuring the availability of basic necessities in the building, adding that the new shelter can accommodate 700 domestic workers in two separate sections for male and female.
He warned that the ministry will take punitive measures against lawbreakers while human rights of the concerned individuals will be taken into consideration.
He affirmed that the officials will do everything possible to implement the standards specified in the international agreement in the domestic workers shelter, assuring that the officials in charge of the shelter are from the concerned ministries such as interior, justice and foreign affairs.
