Kremlin bans sale of S-300 missile systems to Iran

An opportunity for Chinese defence companies.

This would not only be a good chance to make some profits from defence exports but more importantly to build an image as a trust worthy supplier.

You mean start selling HQ-9s to Iran. Boy is the U.S. going to have a field day with that.

Whatever you feel is right.

It'd be a nice move as like i mentioned its a good chance to win their trust.

Besides the Western media will paint it as China's response to Taiwan arms sales.

actually that would be quite stupid. It will just cause more tensions between China and USA. And the revenue wont be very high either. It will take a while to train Iranian personnel on operation of the system, and Israel will definitely try attacking Iran before that.

And west will use it as an Excuse to arm Taiwan to the teeth. It'll just be a major failure on all fronts. If Russia hass backed off, i doubt China will stand in the way.

Iran to sue Russia for not delivering S-300 missile system: MP
2010-09-27 00:07:10

TEHRAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Sunday that the country would sue Russia for the S- 300 missile deal if Russia fails to deliver the system to Iran, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

"The issue can be sued if Russia does not provide Iran with missile system and in such a case compensation should be paid to Iran," Chief of Iran's Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission told reporters.

"We hope Russia abide by its commitments," Boroujerdi was quoted as saying.

Russia has scrapped plans to deliver S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran as they fall under the U.N. sanctions, Russian Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov said Wednesday.

The S-300 is an advanced mobile missile system which can shoot down aircraft and cruise missiles from up to 150 km away.

Iran inked a deal with Russia to purchase the S-300 weaponry systems in 2007, however Russia delayed the missiles' delivery. The United States and Israel have strongly opposed the sale of the missile to Iran.

Why would Iran care after all the S-300 is inferior to the "new domestically produced" missile system anounced earlier this year and on parade already. Oh unless the pretty pictures are just the ones second hand from Belarus and there is no domestic program but OMG that would mean PressTV was lying to us.

Iran's Defense Ministry says it has built a long-range anti-aircraft system capable of simultaneously striking multiple enemy targets.

Iran's Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said Wednesday that the new anti-aircraft missile defense system has been domestically produced.

The system is capable of intercepting multiple missiles and aircraft at once, at high altitude and long range.

"This long-range anti-aircraft system can identify and track multiple targets and is capable of simultaneously destroying them from a long distance," Brigadier General Mohammad-Najjar said at the Islamic Revolution's military achievements exhibition.

The Iranian minister added that the country's defense experts have also been successful in the domestic production of basic material for building surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.

The cited capacities of the newly-built Iranian missile calls to mind the Russian S-300 surface-to-air missile defense system.

Iran builds S-300-style anti-aircraft

Iran has obtained four S-300 surface-to-air missiles despite Russia’s refusal to deliver them to Tehran under a valid contract, a semi-official Iranian news agency claimed today.

The Fars news agency, which has ties to Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard, Iran’s most powerful military force, said Iran received two missiles from Belarus and two others from another unspecified source.

One primary reason for Iran caring is the fact that Iran has paid a sum for it and moreover it was agreed upon in contract. A breach in contract would understandably result in a claim by the aggrieved party. I would have ordinarily deemed this to be an understood element.

Also, as for the "inferiority" you purport, I haven't been able to find a quotation in that regard from an Iranian source regarding the S-300 pitted against it's own systems. Rather, Iran's defense minister, Vahidi, has stated "We will not build (an Iranian version of) S-300 air defense but will manufacture a long-range defense system similar to the S-300 in range." As for the existence of a domestic program, I cannot see how it can be refuted that one is possibly present just because a claim is filed by Iran for a similar system.

I just don't see why Iran isn't allowed to defend itself. I mean, they're "AIR DEFENSE MISSILES" not nukes or anything. If an enemy aircraft flies over Iran, they're just supposed to let it go and do it's job and not do anything?

Welcome to the planet Earth.

Of course Iran is allowed the right to self defense. But what make you believe Iran is entitled to weapons manufactured by others? You have the right to present money but I have the right to refuse to sell.

Iran urges Russia to stay committed to S-300 missile deal
Sept. 28 (Xinhua)

TEHRAN, -- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Tuesday that Russia has to stay committed to the S-300 missile deal, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Iran and Russia have already signed a contract on the missile deal and its content is quite transparent, so the two countries will have to stay committed to it and act based on it, Mehmanparast said.

Iran inked a deal with Russia to purchase the S-300 weaponry systems in 2007, however Russia delayed the missiles' delivery.

Russia has scrapped plans to deliver S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran as they fall under the U.N. sanctions, Russian Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov said last Wednesday.

Russia's action is based on the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1929 which is illegal and unfair, the spokesman was quoted as saying in his weekly press briefing.

Further, the resolution does not include defensive weapons like S-300 missile system, he added.

In June, the U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution to impose a fourth round of sanctions against Iran over its suspected nuclear program.

The S-300 is an advanced mobile missile system which can shoot down aircraft and cruise missiles from up to 150 km away.
