Chinese Fisherman Dies After South Korean Coast Guard Raid
Updated 11:58 a.m., Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- A Chinese fisherman died from injuries sustained in a South Korean coast guard raid after his vessel entered South Korean waters in the Yellow Sea, the Korea Coast Guard said in a faxed statement.

South Korea’s foreign ministry notified the Chinese embassy in Seoul about the death and will investigate the incident, the ministry said in a text message to reporters. The ministry expressed regret over the “unfortunate” incident and sent its condolences to the dead fisherman’s family, it said.

Chinese fishing crews have clashed repeatedly in recent years with the coast guards and commercial vessels of nearby countries, including South Korea, Vietnam and Japan. Yesterday’s killing comes amid heightened tensions with Japan over islands claimed by both sides in an area of the East China Sea rich in fish, oil and gas.

The raid on two vessels occurred at 3:45 p.m. yesterday in southwestern waters, according to the coast guard statement.

Yonhap News reported that a coast guard officer shot and killed the man during a raid on 30 Chinese boats fishing illegally in the area. A separate Korean-language Yonhap report said the fisherman was killed when he was hit by a rubber bullet.

SEOUL—South Korea detained 23 Chinese fishermen Wednesday following the death of a member of the crew a day earlier, in the latest of a series of violent clashes between the South Korean coast guard and Chinese fishing fleets seeking catches in disputed waters in the Yellow Sea.

SOUTH KOREA - The Korean Coast Guard's West regional headquarters in Mokpo said Thursday that it would take legal action and seek arrest warrants for 11 Chinese crewmen and fishermen for obstruction of justice.

The Coast Guard officials investigated the incident involving illegal fishing by the Chinese crewmen in Korea's Exclusive Economic Zone in the West Sea, and found that they used weapons, such as axes and saws, and violence against the Korean marine police.

The latest clash claimed one life of a Chinese fisherman who was hit by a rubber bullet fired by a Coast Guard officer during the scuffle.

The Korean Coast Guard said that it would continue to strictly deal with illegal fishermen who violently counter law enforcements, but will "humanely" deal with those who cooperate.

This comes after China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei urged Korea to fairly investigate and enforce the law nonviolently.

"The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in Seoul will closely monitor the investigation process and urge the ROK to thoroughly investigate the case so as to protect the safety of the lives and legal rights of Chinese fishermen," Hong said, as reported in China's Xinhua news agency.

The Korean coast guard has been too soft and the Chinese fishermen are just running them over.
Hopefully this will send a message to the Chinese fishermen that Korea is not easy to mess with.

.
Yes, those coast guard officers are now cleared to shoot first and ask questions later.

great tactic...I dont think we send any fishermen to your waters, it is too far away.

.
Its tragic...why mess with armed coast guard.

Its difficult now for the fisherman's family.

They only recently got armed. Before, they could not carry weapons and the Chinese fishermen would bully and even kill them

South Korea 'regrets' death of Chinese fisherman

SEOUL: South Korea's foreign minister voiced regret on Friday over the death of a Chinese fisherman in a coastguard operation, as China's ambassador met with top officials in Seoul to discuss the incident.

The 44-year-old fisherman was fatally wounded on Tuesday by a rubber bullet after coastguard commandos boarded two Chinese ships deemed to be fishing illegally in South Korean waters.

The coastguard said the Chinese crew members had threatened the commandos with knives, axes, saws and other weapons.

"It was regrettable that the incident happened during a crackdown against illegal fishing by Chinese vessels, but it should be understood that there was a violent resistance," Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan told reporters.

His comments came as Chinese Ambassador Zhang Xinsen met with South Korea's Vice Foreign Minister *** Ho-Young to voice Beijing's concern over the incident.

China has already demanded a full investigation into what it described as an example of "violent law enforcement" and urged Seoul to "bring the perpetrator to justice".

Illegal fishing by Chinese boats is common in South Korean waters, and more than 130 boats have been seized so far this year.

In December 2010 a Chinese boat overturned and sank in the Yellow Sea after ramming a South Korean coastguard vessel. Two Chinese crewmen were killed.

And last December, a coastguard officer was stabbed to death in a struggle with Chinese sailors.

Poor fishermen, their lives are not too easy, and these armchair warriors think they got it made and calling for exterminations. Why's that so?

Poor fishermen, their lives are not too easy, and these armchair warriors think they got it made and calling for exterminations. Why's that so?

The fishermen, they are naturally good-natured, hard-working for their family...
But unfortunately recently they have been infected expansionist ideology, nationalist ideology, ideology of defy international laws...
They are victims of those thoughts...

They will continue to be the victims if they still keep those thoughts.
