BBC News - South Korea wins Royal Navy tanker deal worth £452m

South Korea wins Royal Navy tanker deal worth £452m

The Royal Navy has chosen South Korean firm Daewoo for a £452m deal to build four new fuel tankers.

The 37,000-tonne Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) tankers will allow the Royal Navy to refuel at sea.

The tankers, which are due to enter service in 2016, will each measure 200m in length and replace models that date back to the 1970s.

UK firms took part in the tender, but the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said none made a final bid to take part.

Despite being built in Korea, the UK has won £150m of associated contracts to assist the project.

These include £90m on UK contracts for equipment, systems, design and support services.

There will be a further £60m investment in the UK to be spent on customising the ships for the Royal Navy, trials and specialist engineering help.

Wow so the British can't even make tankers now. They have 0 manufacturing base and ruined their industries.

The Queen Elizabeth class carriers were originally planned to be built in Korea, but changed the plan due to British industrial concerns. The cost and construction time doubled accordingly.

But the money is tight at the British government right now so the cheaper price and faster construction time wins over saving jobs at UK this time around.

BBC News - Aircraft carrier: A mind-boggling building job

The former deputy chairman of Babcock - which is part of the ACA - Lord Hesketh resigned in November after describing the project as a "disaster".

He told the BBC the carriers could have been built for a fraction of the cost at a shipyard in South Korea and claims the project only went ahead in its present form because of the number of jobs it preserved.

We're busy building aircraft carriers (a huge project if you didn't know), submarines, the last of the Type 45s, and when the carriers/T45s are finished will move on to building the Type 26 frigates, and MHPC vessels. Trust me, we can build plenty.
Most of the RFA tankers were built in the 70s, they need replacing. This represents good value for taxpayers money. Thanks Daewoo!

That's quite ignorant of you to say that, the British have one of the best navies in the world and a very well established manufacturing industry. They have been building AC, Frigates, Destroyers, and Submarines for sometime now. Their might be space problem where the shipyards wouldn't have enough space to handle another projects and lack of man power.

Nope, Britain's jet engine technology is decades ahead of that of South Korea.

Furthermore, the technology to build the civilian ship is actually quite low, and South Korea's warship is basically the American technology being assembled in South Korea.

By the way, if any Korean government ministers or civil servants are reading this: sratch our back and buy Eurofighter! :p

Wishful thinking. We should worry about our industries instead and try to reach their manufacturing standards.

I think they wanna buy F-35, since USA is their boss. :coffee:

Yes, very true. Though a quick wiki search showed that Typhoon lost out on a bid a few years back- though there will be some MPs who will inevitably think the tanker deal might resurrect that one. :/

1-it's a tanker. the british didn't ask the korean to build them AEGIS-capable King Sejong class destroyer
2-what does a jet engine technology have to do with shipbuilding industry?

you practically replying a stupid remark with another stupid remark

The Typhoon bid's problem is pricing. The Typhoon bid price was the highest of four bidders back in 2002, and they still got no chance as long as their pricing is not competitive.

The Korean government agency running these bidding contests are very price sensitive, and they really really don't play US favoritism(It is a tie breaker, doesn't give extra-points for being American). Just ask Raytheon how many times they lost in Korean bids against cheaper bidding Swedish and Israeli rivals, ditto for Bell.

The Typhoon will not be the most expensive bid this time around, that honor goes to the F-35(Thus the F-35 already lost. If they wanted to buy F-35, then they would have delayed the contest by three years and buy 20 additional F-15Ks to buy time, as this was the scenario floating around. But the decision to hold the bidding contest this year shows that they are perfectly OK with accepting non-F-35 models.). But Boeing and Saab will surely underbid EADS Cassidian.
