KOLKATA: Nearly 550 sex workers representatives from about 44 countries will be congregating in the city on Saturday to participate in a conference on freedom of sex workers. The two-day event, to be held on July 21 and 22, will run parallel to the XIX International AIDS Conference being organized in Washington DC from Sunday.

"We have been working in the field of HIV/AIDS for the past 20 years. It is unfortunate that the community that is most vulnerable to infection has not been included to as a part of the conference, Therefore, we had to take up this parallel conference," said Bharati Dey, secretary, Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC).

The first-ever Global Hub of the International AIDS Conference is being hosted and co-hosted by DMSC, Global Network of Sex Workers (NWSP) and All India Network of Sex Workers (AINSW) respectively. The meet in Kolkata will have direct communication through satellite link with the Washington DC conference. Adding glamour to the meet will be the likes of Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a well known activist who will host the conference.

"This conference has been held for over a decade25 years. But people living with HIV and the most at-risk communities have been prohibited for the first time by the US government, due to their ignorant policy," said Dr Samrajit Jana, DMSC chief advisor.

I am a vocal supporter of legalizing prostitution. I have personally witnessed the kind of abuse and neglect they are face everyday. No one should have live such lives.

Most of them are not in their profession by choice--there is absolutely no need to further dehumanize them.

Issue licenses, make routine STD check-ups mandatory for license renewal ( check-up must be conducted by government hospital) , launch awareness campaigns and create government schools near red-light areas.

I think there's a lot of growth protential thery could explore. There's just so much free sex going on that could be milked for money if they raise a second wave of feminism that makes women demand 'damages for the use of their body' (as for gays, they could just go stuff themselves).

They could also push laws lowering the age of consent so more prostitutes are available.

The opportunities are endless.

Of course there is. You're comparing all animals and some (=most) humans. There is a difference, at least in some opinions, and that is the spirit that a human carries and an animal doesn't. Prostitution is never going away despite concentrated efforts throughout 2000 years of known history.

Ignoring their existence will only make the problems worse. Alienating them and their children will lead to the creation of even more criminals and future sex-workers.

I have interacted with many sex workers. They are unanimous when it comes to doing all they can prevent a similar fate happening to their children.

How can their children be saved if they are not even allowed to grow in a safe environment ?

Not to mention--legalized prostitution with license requirements will go a long way towards ensuring India rids itself of AIDS and other STD's.
