Situation in Indian-held Kashmir seems to be spiraling out of control. The Kishtwar violence go viral and spread to other parts of the valley forcing the administration to imposition of curfew in parts of Jammu, Udhampur, Rajouri, Reasi town and Lakhanpur town of Kathua district on Sunday. Kishtwar is already under curfew since the Eid festival on Friday after Kashmiris demanding independence and hoisting Pakistani flags clashed with the police and para-military forces. There was unspecified number of casualties because the strict press censor does not allow the exact figure to come out.
The situation is so grim that, according to Hindustan Times report, the government has not only refused to allow political leaders to visit the district but has also suspended Amarnath yatra and mobile services in the state. Jammu University exams have also been postponed. Indian Army has been called in the aid of civil administration. There were reports of violence and arson on Saturday in Jammu leading to imposition of curfew. The newspaper has also reported that vehicular movement on Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained suspended for the second consecutive day amid reports that additional forces have been deployed to ensure that normal movement of traffic is restored at the earliest.
The areas where curfew has not been imposed, the government has imposed curfew-like restrictions; a ban has been imposed on assembly of people and barbed wires have been put up at many places to restrict the movement. In Jammu, while movement has been restricted in minority community areas, people are not being allowed to step out of their houses in Rajouri.
In another development, fresh exchange of fire between border forces of India and Pakistan on the Line of Control (LOC) has been reported.
