JEDDAH — Illiteracy in Saudi Arabia dropped by 4 percent among men and 11 percent among women during the last year, according to an education official.

Speaking at the official opening of the Second Meeting for Adult Education, Dr. Yousef Al-Arif, director of adult education in Jeddah, said: “Saudi Arabia is doing its best to combat illiteracy.”

The official highlighted the importance of continuing education and praised the Ministry of Education’s consistent efforts in providing the best methods to fight illiteracy and provide adult education.

He said the Kingdom succeeded in drastically cutting illiteracy rate because of the encouragement received from the government.

The meeting, carrying the theme, “Adult education…quality and investment”, was inaugurated Sunday by Abdullah Al-Thagafi, director of education in Makkah region, as part of Arab Literacy Education celebrations.

Norah Al-Sheikh, a social consultant and former director of adult education for women in Makkah region, noted that according to new figures released by the Ministry of Education, the Kingdom has made massive strides in its bid to eradicate illiteracy.

She said: “The rate of illiteracy has fallen and efforts to combat one of the country’s biggest problems began in 1954, with the introduction of special education programs for adults.”

She said the government of Saudi Arabia introduced further educational reforms in 1972 with the Adult Education and Illiteracy Eradication Regulation.

This outlined the general policy for education in the Kingdom as well as obligations from both the state and private sector in terms of reducing illiteracy.

She said: “The Kingdom established a large number of adult education centers in order to make education available to everyone and to eliminate illiteracy.

“For people living in isolated rural areas, the government conducts intensive three-month adult education courses during the summer.”

She announced that the Kingdom’s literacy rate is over 90 percent for men, and just over 70 percent for women. The literacy rate for children under 15 is 89.2 percent for boys and 93.2 percent for girls.

[MENTION=12445]I know why you posted this... trying to make friends?
You've been having many bad days lately, SL. I guess you need friends now very badly.

No, I posted the article because Pakistan has its own illiteracy problem but unlike KSA it doesn't have the same dedication and perseverance to solve it. Because that's all it takes - not great wealth, but effort. Also note that the Saudis have an emphasis on training women to read, quite unlike the acid-throwing school-burning Talibs.

More about friends: a Saudi ambassador helped save one of my family's friends from Hanafi terrorists who took her hostage thirty-five years ago, whereas the Iranian mullahs assassinated one of my neighbors around the same time. Too bad the Sauds (especially their current king) freak out at the very thought of endorsing Zionism, but that's more their loss than mine.

Can you elaborate Solomon2? Sounds like an interesting story.

Thank you for the article.

Mostly the elders who are still illiterate are Bedouins or people who live on the countryside. It's always a joy to see people who were illiterate for most of their lives learn such a beautiful and colorful language like Arabic. Especially since it is the language of Islam and that of Arabs. Can't imagine how it must be to live as a illiterate in the year 2013.

Do you have a solid proof that the Saudis support terror groups in Pak? Also, the US never stated that the Saudi Government was behind 9/11? I still don't understand why you hate us so much. LoL...

The neighbor assassinated in 1980 was Tabtabaei. The assassin escaped to the mullahs' Iran, married, starred in propaganda movies, and manages the Press TV website - the site PDF member @Hasbara Buster likes quoting from so much.

The hostage incident I'm referring to is the 1977 Hanafi Siege. Ambassador (from the Shah's Iran) Zahedi - NOT the Saudi ambassador (anybody could make that slip) - together with ambassadors from Sadat's Egypt and Bhutto's Pakistan talked the terrorists into surrender.

Zahedi ≠ Saudi. You can't trust your ears; you have to be literate to catch it!
